l am looking to purchase a Yamaha SDR200 (aka the whippet) which was I believe a Japanese market only bike produced around 1986 or 1987; have found one which is a bit overpriced at a shade under £2K.

Anyone know where to find one but also who would be the go to people re restoration/spares?

cheers

Cracking bike but very rare. Have you actually tried one as they are comically small if you are anything over 5ft/8stone.

Have you considered a SRX400/600 or RZ-1 both similar to the SDR but different to each other?

Comically small is an understatement. Miniscule little things, what about a Yamaha R1-Z, supercool.

All the grey imports are rare now and commanding good money if you do find one.

I actually looked into buying one in the grey import boom (late 90s) but I was warned off because of spare availability- even then.

Very cool little things though smile

I can remember Rupert Paul raving about how brilliant they were in an issue of PB back when it was worth reading.

Am I right in saying they used the engine from the DT200 which had problems with its little end bearings if thrashed?

They aren't worth more than about £1800 max, but like all two strokes they seem to be ludicrously overpriced at the moment.

Watch out for the kind of dealers that stock them. One of them (BridgeMoto in Reading) sold a mate of mine a 'fully serviced' CBR250 with no teeth on the front sprocket a few years back.

I recall that they were charging £2k for their SDR's. Good bikes, but not worth the cash IMO.
