Does my Dad need to complete a CBT?
Discussion
CBT will validate the 50cc part of his licence, meaning he won't have to display L-plates, will be allowed passengers and so forth (Except riding on motorways, for highly obvious reasons)
He does need to complete CBT to validate the licence first.
He will also be allowed to ride upto 14.6 bhp 125s on L-plates with all the restrictions of a learner. (no passengers, no motorways, etc)
50s aren't just auto scooters btw, there's geared bikes as well. (A fairly pointless development, but still...)

Not true.. If you passed your car driving test before 1 February 2001 you don’t need to take CBT to ride a moped.I'm also fairly sure you don't need one for a 125cc either if you passed your driving test before the above date. I never did a CBT to ride a 125cc.

I had a lot of crap this year, with insurance companies refusing to quote me because I hadn't ridden for a while, so had no ncb for a bike, was claiming to have a full licence (which I have), but hadn't ever passed a CBT, and the people dealing with insurance quotes just don't believe you, and actually tell you that you must take a CBT, even though you have a licence.
Having said all that, I think the CBT would be fantastic for your dad, but I don't think he has to do it, he doesn't need to validate his licence, because he already has provisional entitlement for a 125, and will have had for 40 years !

Interesting, so the link says pre 2001 and car license no CBT needed, but no L plate mention. Do you definitely or not need L plates if no CBT? May get my Mrs a scooter as a step towards bikes, don't think she'd like L plates though :-)I'm also fairly sure you don't need one for a 125cc either if you passed your driving test before the above date. In the olden days, when you passed a car test, you automatically got full entitlement to a moped, no L plates needed, as well as minibusses, 7.5 ton trucks etc. and provisional entitlement for a motorcycle.
Before that, in my dads days, when you passed a car test, you automatically got full motorcycle entitlement as well.
My dad had a full motorcycle licence, and he never owned a bike in his life, as far as I know his one and only ride was a go on my honda ss50 !

I once had a car policy that specifically covered me to ride any bike which shows how times have changed, I have to pay extra for DOC cover these days Before that, in my dads days, when you passed a car test, you automatically got full motorcycle entitlement as well.

Unless your Dad's in his 90's I'm not sure if that's an accurate point. I passed my test in 1966 & had to, to ride anything over 250cc then. As I recall I could ride owt up to 250 on L plates before passing a test even though I have quite a few entitlements on the licence that don't automatically apply today. My dad had a full motorcycle licence, and he never owned a bike in his life, as far as I know his one and only ride was a go on my honda ss50 !
My old boy could drive/ride absolutely anything on his licence- but he was born in 1912 !!

Oi. You change gear every 2 seconds just to gain about 10/15 mph per gear, even doing full throttle clutchless upshifts those 6 gear changes to get to 60 account for over a second in the difference between my old scooter and the baby CBR to 70 indicated... And let's face it, a 50 2t with a 70/80 (I forget which your machine was running) big bore kit is pretty much as fast as a 125 4t...
And the 125 will get to your destination, not needing permenant worry about is it going to try to kill me on the way.

I was sort of showing how things have changed, but don't impact on those that already have a licence, which is why I think the op's dad doesn't need to worry about cbt, although it'd do him no harm at all, I don't think he has to do it.
