Sportsbike to Adventure
Discussion
Evening all
considering moving from sportsbike to adventure style bike. Does anyone have first hand experience of the move?
Bit of background, always had race rep bikes in the past, currently on a SP1 and have been for 6 years but previously rode GSXR750's, ZX9R, RC45, RGV250's back in the day and a couple of early Blades.
Bike gets used for fast road use only and herein lies the problem. It's getting too fast, regular knee down, use all of the tyre, high revs in the upper gears etc etc.
Looking at the GS and the like, just looking for other experience's

I did it. I went from an R1 back in 2006 to a KTM 950 Adventure. This was many because I went self employed and wanted to have a bike I could head off on for a month or so at a time. I still have the KTM, having taken it to Africa twice, and love it to bits. It is great fun, a bit lairy and thoroughly dependable. Works brilliantly as a commuter, is good in crap weather (although a Scottish winter nearly killed it due to the salt), and is great fun when you just want to get away from it all. The other thing I've found is that I will go off exploring some really poor quality single track roads and have a great time, all the while knowing that on a sportsbike it wouldn't be much fun at all.
That said, by early 2007 I was missing a sportsbike and picked up an RS250 as a toy. I now also have a Superbike in the garage too. I can't see me ever getting rid of the KTM though.

Considered a slower sportsbike?
I would second this as you seem to be considering an Adventure bike as you want to slow down. Like I said, I love mine, but I bought specifically because I wanted to head off and have adventures on it. Had I bought it to calm me down I would have enjoyed the novelty for a few days and then started to get bored. Also, some of the newer adventure bikes are pushing out 140+bhp. They really aren't going to slow you down too much.
I think the majority of the problem stems from the way modern superbikes dictate how they are ridden. Head down arse up doesn't translate well into bimbling about.
What does one class as a slower sportsbike?
I can get my superbike fix from trackdays so "missing" the sportsbike element isn't going to be the problem

Same for me, got punted off the road on my Daytona 675 back in 2009, if I wanted another sportsbike I'd have another 675 in a heartbeatThe accident kind of made me realise there's so much I've not seen, so I bought a 990 Adventure S and promptly climbed every mountain:

Forded every stream:

Mixed it up with the sportsbikes:

Had a stab at off-roading:

Went to the Elefantentreffen

Then decided I ought to go to Morocco:

Best bike choice I ever made, I get bored easily, went through four bikes in two years but now, four years later, every time I think I fancy something new I realise I could never sell it...
Since Sunday I've been reassesing what got me into bikes. Because I was never a biker growing up. I mentioned it in another thread the this week to. But Ewan and Charley got me into bikes. I bought a sportsbike by accident because I was distracted by the beauty of it and the allure of speed.
I've been browsling Honda XL650 and old BMW F650s. But this may also just be because I'm a bit sad at the moment. I always think of ways run off when I'm like this.

I know that mindset. Plan a trip, look into all the nitty gritty stuff of getting to places you want to ride too, even if you don't do it you'll keep yourself busy & that helps.Always been into sportsbikes but recently bought/built a Ducati Monster 900.
Whilst it is still a sporty & capable ride and still 'real world' quick, I find my self riding it 20mph slower than I do on the 916, yet feeling like I'm going fast enough, it's certainly more licence friendly.
Maybe I'm getting too old?

I've even registered on advrider.com tonight.
I am a little drunk. Last time I was like this I booked my IoM tickets. Who knows, I might make it to the continent next.

Try The Hubb as well, they tend to have more of the planning side detail IIRC. http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hubb/

Bloody love reading ride reports and planning trips to do when I get and adventure bike. Thinking of a KTM 990 adv r or a 690 enduro r with rally raid fairings and safari tanks.

^^^^ That looks like how I want my biking trips to go. Won't happen for a bit though, other things to spend cash on.
It was the best decision I ever made...Ended up with me seeing some awesome parts of the world, gave me the drive to quit my job and go off working on these:

Where I met my then girlfriend, now fiancee, who loves the bikes...

Life is good...

The 990 is a BIG bike, unless you're spending weeks at a time or are happy to handle it off road the slightly lighter 690 would probably be a better betBuuuuut...
The 990 is addictively powerful (the torque, THE TORQUE!!) and the twin engine is much nicer than the singles

Tbh if I ever get one it will spend most of the time on the road, but still would prefer to have the option to venture offroad.
