2 months ago I had had enough of struggling through traffic jams to get to work and decided that buying a bike was cheaper than moving house.

A couple of friends suggested I get an SV650. However, I demanded proper advice so went browsing through some old PH threads........ and discovered that they were right. A more interesting discovery from reading the threads was that Hertsbiker was thinking of getting a Ninja in the spring and therefore his SV650S would have to go. A few emails later and it was mine if I wanted it!

So I had a couple of lessons, passed my test and somehow managed to persuade my Dad to give me a lift up to Hertfordshire today.

The sun was out but it was very cold so I took no chances and put my extreme weather ski gear on under my biker gear. Took the bike for a short test ride and all was working fine so I gave Carl an envelope full of cash and he gave me the keys to the bike.

It was a bit nervy at first as the previous night's rain had left a few lakes on the roads around Hertfordshire but once on the motorway things became much easier.

If you want to get a bit of experience on a new bike then I suggest a 150 mile trip home. I got a very sore arse somewhere on the M25 so stopped in at Fleet to have a rest, stretch and re-juice the bike. Also learnt my first practical lesson don't take your gloves off to drink your Dr Pepper - those bottles are very cold when straight out of the fridge.

Back on the bike and down to sunny Bournemouth (right hand still a bit numb from the Dr Pepper incident) grinning like an idiot all the way.

It was very cold today but I did not feel it at all when on the bike so thoroughly recommend wearing ski gear under your bike clothing. I also did this during my lessons when the instructors were all complaining about the cold and rain but I was warm and dry.

So there it is - I decided to get a bike as a practical form of transport just for getting to work but now feel like throwing the car keys away and just sticking to two wheels.

See you on the open road.

Nice one!

I no longer do winter riding but when it's cold in spring (like our 6am meet earlier this year!!) I use the Helly Hansen Ski thermals under leathers

Good work T boy. The SV is an amazing bike. It does it's commuter job well, but has a really sporty chassis too which means you can throw it around a track at an unbelievable pace. It's a thoroughly good choice for your first bike experience.

good man Mr T ! you said you'd post something. Jolly good stuff. I'm not sure I can wait for spring when you write stuff like that. I think Feb will do. Keep it shiney side up now.
