Hi All

On the good advice of others on this forum ive booked more motorbike lessons and may buy something with two wheels before the summer (if i pass). What would you recommend buying for doing the full test, I do a lot of sport (esp skiing although this year not as much as id like) so am pretty paranoid about cracking my ankles and was wondering if bike boots were a good bet. If so what sort of socks do people wear with them? Or what about helmets although the learning centre has got all new helmets so theyre not bad. I think i will defo get some gloves though as the ones I was lent last time stank of cheese. Looking forward to it,cant wait

Alfa,

These are good ideas, make sure you buy a known make (it doesn't have to be alpinestars, dianiese etc but a known brand). Budget 50-100 (200 for the best) quid for boots, 40-100 (150 for best) for gloves, and 100-200 (400 for best) for a helmet. Buy a decent set of leathers, a good 2-piece set will be 300-400 (past a 1000 if you are rich!) or go for goretex type with armour for about 100 for the jacket and the same again for the tros!

Take care and go for a full set of kit. A good helmet, gloves and boots won't save your knees and elbows if you come off!

Alfa.

Good luck with your riding.

I would advise not to scrimp on kit,
- get a good pair of boots ie Alpinestars SMX3 ~£150
- get your own lid (helmet) again pay as much as you value your skull.
- Get good comfy pairs of winter & summer gloves,
- Jacket & Trousers will depend on what sort of bike you would want. but I would say get a Material set of trousers & jacket as they can go on anybike. If you do want to get leathers I would wait until you are riding as what feeling comfy standing in a shop will be completely different sat on a bike doing a long trip, also leathers may be cold this time of year.

Tim.

Find out where your nearest J&S Accessories is and go along and see what they have.
They always seem to have deals on something or other and even without are still a good bit cheaper.

Waiting for a show is good advice. There are a lot of end of line bargains at really low prices. There is also a lot of crap, but go there with a fixed budget and a good idea of what you want and by which manufacturer and you will hopefully be pleasantly surprised by the prices.

Its normally last years colours and models, but who cares? That's why I always buy black.

at every track day I go on, I notice everyone has the same boots as me. Sidi Vertebra II.

I have side swiped a car in mine, and broke a tiny bone. not bad considering I lost the gear lever and foot rest in the crush.

If your size 12 I have some you can have for a tenner, as I have replaced them with matching colours to my bike (black), these are blue.

ebay is reliable for boots, and cheap too.

Some of the cheap gear is cheap for a reason. Just cos a suit is leather doesn't mean it will fare any better than a decent fabric based jacket in a spill. Be careful what you buy if you attempt to go bargain hunting.

If you are paranoid about your ankles, you want to try and find a boot which has a protective 'inner boot'. These are often solid inserts which are articulated around the ankle joint. I've just bought a pair of daytona evos, but they are expensive at around 260 (from germany) - but after seeing two mates who have had to have bone grafts and now have unequal length legs, the money is money well spent. Your choice at the end of the day.

With ragard to a bike, it depends what type of riding you think you will do most of. Almost any type of bike will seem a lot quicker than most cars, so it depends whether you want something to tour on, commute with, go for quick blasts, etc. Don't spend too much on your first bike, as you may change your mind and decide to flog it to buy something else pretty soon after getting used to it.

Top advice Cheers guys,

Stooz not even close to a size 12 more like an 8 but thanks anyway. I quite fancy the Sidi boots they do look pretty good and seem to be a popular choice. What date is the bike show on and where can I get tickets I might go as Im a firm beliver in the black will never be out of fashion poliy mentioned earlier.

Bike wise I am hammond sized so dont want anything too huge perhaps a Honda Hornet 600 or suzuki Bandit. No doubt when I get on the Honda cb500 direct access bikes they will feel like shit of a stick as I reckon plus rider they still have well over 200bhp/ton with only 57hp!
