So, my renewal on may BMW K1300S is due in a few days and I'm doing the usual of getting quotes. I'm on the phone to one of the attractive options (reasonable price, reasonable organisation) when the following conversation happens:

InsCo: Are there any accessories fitted?
Me: It occasionally has the BMW optional extra panniers fitted, value of the panniers is £500.
InsCo: Are these BMW panniers?
Me: Yes, they're from the BMW parts list and are fitted as standard to certain variants of the bike but optional extras on others.
InsCo: OK, please hold while I check with our underwriters .....
InsCo: Our underwrites will accept the panniers but the £500 won't be paid as part of any claim. As you sometimes have the panniers fitted, you policy price will increase to XXXX (£22 more than previously quoted on-line)

So I have to pay more because I sometimes use the optional extra BMW panniers (that are standard fitment on other K1300S variants which don't cost any more to insure - I checked!) but the panniers aren't covered!

And people wonder why Joe Public think insurance companies don't know their arse from their elbow!

Yes you're right. The whole insurance industry is ridiculous due to this one conversation.

I think it took more than one conversation to form such opinions.

Bonkers eh. My HP4 insurance renewal came through this week (£2.00 cheaper than last year). Phoned around as you do, went back to them and got them to re-process me as a new customer and bingo saved myself £148.00. Now paying £200.50. That's insurance for ya !!!!

I've just reinsured my Daytona. I notice MCE have dropped legal cover it seems.

They quoted me £770 renewal on the phone. Dropped to £750 once I said it was too expensive.

Went online and set the date for the next day, and it dropped to about £550, all the same details. Phoned up again and they said "it always goes up on the phone" - haha, fine i'll take it out online then instead.

Set the commencing date a week ahead and it dropped to £430. A couple of weeks later it came out as £370 when I tried online. Adding a few hundred to the value, and declaring my screen, indicators, exhaust, crash bungs and seat made no difference, nor did an extra few thousand miles. Compare The Market came out as £350, so I clicked through, and finished the payment off on MCEs online quote system.

Madness - zero continuity. But paid less than half of what they quoted me on the phone in the end... laugh - would avoid MCE but can't afford to double my premium and go with Bikesure.

Insurance and banking, the industries where customer loyalty is punished.

So you want them to cover a fairly high-value optional extra that's both easily removable (therefore nickable) and at high risk of being damaged... but you don't want to pay more for that extra cover, right?

You've got to stop with the logical stuff we're talking about insurance here. Although I will give blackk1 the fact that on those models where it's standard they don't charge more. This is probably as they don't really rate bikes in detail and one model gets a catch all premium for its sub models.

Except that they're not covering it if it gets nicked or damaged...

I have to say that I'm not convinced by that.

Well, that's what the OP said.

And, in fairness, I have heard similar from other people so I don't doubt it.

One of us is reading the story incorrectly (it could well be me). I read that he's being charged extra for having panniers, but the panniers aren't actually covered.
I would guess he's happy to pay extra, but would like something for his money, rather than paying £22, having his panniers nicked, then being told that his £22 didn't actual entitle him to anything whatsoever. I don't really see what the extra money is supposed to be for.

That's already been covered, so why raise it again?

I'm not convinced that the panniers are excluded from cover either.

For clarity, the panniers would NOT be covered but the premium increased because they would occasionally be fitted. And those are the exact same panniers, with the same security, that would be fitted as standard to other K1300S variants (thus would not be declared as extras) that would cost the non-increased premium to insure!

If there is logic in there it beats me!

Why mention them? If anyone asks, say they were standard fitment...who's to know?
They only charge the extra for accessories in case they get nicked or damaged and you make a claim. But yours were standard factory fitment, right...
