Hanging up my Lid
Discussion
I have taken the great decision to Sell me bike and Hang up my leathers & lid.
Yesterday I looked back over the past months since I moved house (in July) I have used my bike probably 5 times in that period, one of those was a track Day and then 4 short runs. i can't keep the bike at my house so it is kept at my folks house 30 miles away, so If I decide I want an hour ride out, it is 30-45 mins there, 30 mins to get bike out warmed up and me kitted out and then the same at the end of the ride., In that time iI have insured the bike, serviced it, news tyres new sprokets, so including finance payments, but not including depriciation it has cost me over £300 for each trip out on the bike.
Once it has gone, I know I will dread each and every nice day as I will be thinking, I could have gone out today.
Will I Miss my Bike - Yes
Will I miss the biking culture - Yes
Will I miss Track days - Yes
Why am I selling? - Pass
Excuse my babbling on, but my mrs doesn't understand my biking needs!!

Been there many years ago - it is a huge wrench, nothing truly compares to the exhileration - but buying a TVR gets you close if that`s any help!

Hi Tim,
I don't know your circumstances, but maybe a trade down to an older sports bike (saw the GSXR in your profile!)and buy a ground anchor/metal bike garage...
The spring/summer will come and you will be itching for a ride...
Don't give it up mate, you bought your house last July so things should settle down on that front
Regards
Paul

Thanks Guys.
I will be back!!! Will be getting a Mille or Z1000 in a few years time. I have considered getting something older/ cheaper but it will still be the same - Lack of use.
On the upside me & a mate are now looking for a pro kart to take up our speed thrills with, will be a lot cheaper and I should hopefully have more chance to use it as I will have more of an excuse with my mate also doing it!.

You've bought a 999 for a (min) 2 hour daily commute???
Maybe you should get an Enzo for the weekly shopping run too, equally as practical.
I suggest you take a look at running costs/valuations on high mile, battle scarred Ducatis.
If it's not too late, beg your dealer for an extended road test to see how much 'fun' it will be commuting in that riding position, with those mirrors, using the 'characterful' clutch in traffic, enjoying the frequent expensive tyre changes.
By all means have a 999, but please don't entertain commuting on one. Buy a £1200 snotter for the daily grind - you'll still get there in the same amount of time, but will protect your interests on the Duke and relish the Sunday rides that little bit more.
To use an analogy on owning a snotter, it's a bit like eating supermarket sandwiches all week for lunch, then getting a roast dinner with all the trimings on a Sunday.
Good Luck - I think you might need it.

With the Multistrada, I found the mirrors frustrating in traffic.
I know I've two elbows, I don't need to see them all the time.
And the clutch became quite hard work after a while in town.
The riding position on the 999 will surely be worse for commuting.
And two weeks, to get electrical parts from Italy, which turned out to be wrong again, is ludicrous in today's market.

Truly I do not think the 999 is the ideal everyday bike.
I do have one, it is currently at Casoli's having a bit of a make over.
I would prefer to be on a blade every day. Plus however much Ducati say that their electrics are sorted, it is not so. It will let you down in the wet at some point. Also the duck is realy a track bike, you dont get much back unless you are pushing on a fair bit. Each to their own I am not trying to scare anyone away from owning what is a great bike, the latest one is the one to get, nearly the same as last year's 999r, on power.
Oh yeah back to the topic, you will not be able to resist bikes if they are in your blood, simple as that.
I broke my spine 5 years ago and still ride. Well atleast I would if my foot was not broken. Yeah another incident, ( taken out by another biker, overtaking and not looking).
Waiting for the summer, and the foot to mend. Nick

My lid is gathering dust, but the leathers are only sleeping. One day soon they'll walk again, climb on a bike, and I will have a huuuuuuggge grin.
Giving up is never easy, getting back into the sport only hurts the wallet. But you know you're gonna regret selling up.
I do. But I needed the cash, and an upgrade is on the way!
Keep it shiney side up folkes.
BTW Nigel, it was the blue Z750.

Seeing as we're locals, though, we'll have to meet up for a bit of a blast when the weather gets better.
