Had a test ride on as S1000 R the other day and liked it. I started searching the net for info on them and they seem to have their fair share of problems ( leaking water pumps, stalling, head gasket failure, electronic glitches).

Is this just the forum phenomenon of only reporting the bad stuff and a handful of cases or are they wider spread issues?

Coming from riding a Honda I'm used to scheduled maintenance, fuel and washing it!!
I know if I buy new it'll be under warranty for two years but dont want to buy something that's going to cause me hassle.

Mine is only five months or so / 1200 miles old but it feels as if it is going to be pretty solid for a number of years. I swapped an s1000rr for it and it didn't feel as well made. I needed a new sump and switchgear under warranty....the gearbox never felt great. Not scientific, but gut feel.

2012 model bought with 900 miles on it in March '13....now wearing 16,500 miles made up,of weekend road, regular track and several Euro trips thrown in....no issues , just the fairly flimsy , well documented switchgear to be replaced this month under warranty , as I couldn't be arsed waiting the extra couple of hours near the dealership last year as they hadn't failed, just being done out of goodwill and as a preventative...still work now.
Regular oil and filter changes - regular nut and bolt checks and all good .
I'm sure Loon will tell you about his own, but as I understand it , at least two ( 3-4?) years , huge number of track days and some races thrown in -on his 2010 model, no issues he's ever mentioned ....
All bikes have individual issues in a model run, just some people are unlucky ...some less so.

Think he means the R buddy.

Not sure if they share the same lump though.

I think you may have answered your one question: all bikes are prone to some fault or other and if you look on forums you will see those that post problems as no-one keeps posting that their bike is problem free.

My S 1000 R has 6500 miles on the clock and I've not had a problem yet (although it is only just over 6 months old).

I don't have any complaints with mine. Well, a few minor moans (eg mirrors are st over 5000 rpm). Overall a great bike.

The R is fairly close to the RR though and I would expect that as they have been building the R for a few years that some of the early bugs and issues will have been fixed,
making the R a bit better.

the one i ordered from the factory died at the dealers in PDI -- wiring loom blew, took out ECU and most of canbus

Bought a K1300S instead -- which i love hugely.

they had a batch of valves that caused some(loads)engine blow ups.
they has some switch gear problems that are mostly sorted after recalls and failures.
they use coolant, not lots but every few thousand miles it needs topping up.
there were/are some dodgy water pumps but if you get one that leaks its a warrenty item.
some bikes eat oil supposedly.
from my personal experience most bmw dealers are crap.
the bike itself is epic.
ive had mine from new in march and im at 6000 mile and its great.
tyres wear out really fast because it gets a pasting everywhere.
30 to 35 mpg is what i get.
i just love it.

Thanks guys for sharing your experiences. I've test ridden a few bikes recently as I'm keen to have a change. The S1000 R rode really well and is top of the pile at the moment.

Kind Regards Doggydog33

Are the wiring and ECU not from the same supplier in the k1300 then?

Entirely different units. At least one generation apart. If not more

Turned out it was a fault in the wiring loom, and happened at the factory as part of the original build. Loom can only be replaced at factory on S1000R, according to BMW UK

Not had mine long, but looking through the service history and notes it's only had problems with the cruise control switches (which I had too when I picked it up).

The coolant use is a given, though apparently there's been a design change to the reservoir now.
