Im going to give my Honda CG some fresh oil and need to get a torque wrench to tighten up the sump plug. Halfrauds seems to have a pretty good one for about 40 quid but is 3/8 and 6-45lb/ft a good all rounder that I could also use on my car?

Depends what you need to do on the car but I suspect you will need another that goes above 45lb/ft. Not done any work on steering or suspension lately but, for example, rear spindle on the bike needs about 70 lb/ft every time I adjust the chain. I had to buy 2 torque wrenches, to cope with the wide range of differing bolts to be tightened on various bikes.

I bought a Halfrauds torque wrench which was pretty ropey. I then bought a proper one. This one looks pretty good;

Norbar are well regarded as are Britool and these online suppliers can pretty much supply them for similar money to a chocolate halfords one.

Ride did a review of the accuracy of torque wrenches a while ago. A halfords one came out as the winner IIRC. Surprisingly, the snap-on wrench was about 7th!

You don't need to torque up the sump plug, just do it by feel. on't over tighten it otheriwse you will strip the threads in the bottom of the sump, which either means a helicoil insert or a new sump!

Just remember, a torque wrench is for life, not just for christmas......

I've got two torque wrenches from halfords (one I've had for about 8 years and the other for about 4 years) and I've never had any problem with either.

yep The torque wrench from halfords won best in one magazine recently .It was the one with the little window in the handle for setting the torque IIRC.

think they even dropped them then tested them all again to see if they lost callibration.

You want a half inch drive for anything serious and a top end of 100 ft lb or so... but for a sump plug? That's just weird. Perhaps Honda are just being ultra-paranoid about warranty claims for stripped threads or something equally far out.

I only have socket sets/ Torque wrench with 1/2 inch drives but you can get an adaptors set to enable use of 3/4, 3/8 even 1/4.

BTW the rear wheel nut on the Ducati requires a 54mm socket and they only seem to be available as a 3/4 drive - Torque settings 115ftlb really need a long torque wrench.
