I've got an irrational hankering for a Ducati 848.

I've found a nice one, 10 plate with reasonably low miles quite local to me. I had a look through its history today and it is due a belts service (belts were done 1500 ago but need done on time now)

Main dealer rate for a major service service seems to be around £300 plus the belts (£100ish?)

How much could I expect to pay at an indy for this?

Any other things I should look out for with one of these?

Cheers

That doesn't seem too far out, belts, valve clearances and a service on my 848 Evo was £650.. if the valve clearances haven't been checked in a while, it pays to have them done at the same time as the belts as there is quite a bit of duplicated labour apparently...

You can get them done at an Indy for about £250.00 all in.

Valve clearances were done with the belts 1500 ago so should still be in spec, but like you say, no point in paying again to have the same parts stripped down and checked.

The fact it needs the belts done will hopefully give me a little wiggle room on the price. (I cant imagine the dealer will want to warranty a bike with overdue belts)

I have a Ducati 848 SF at 4572 miles on the 2013 plate, last MD service was at 3500 miles 10/2017, after 15 months and only 1k miles, do I really need a service? I've called Ducati Manchester and they're quoting me circa £500, thats daylight robbery in my world!!!

You do if you want to keep the service history up to date, and you have bought an 848, not a CBR600, surely you knew this wouldn't cost the same to run, do you have the same attitude to your Ferrari servicing ?

And what are they quoting £500 for ? Full service with belts or minor service with belts ? If the former, thats cheap, if the latter its the upper end of the cost window but not a mickey take.

Also if its out of warranty find a decent Indy, MD have a good rep but they will charge Ducati rates.

Maybe but that's about the going rate, the belts are expensive and there's a fair few hours labour on a service with belts & valves.

I have 2 Ducatis and do all the maintenance myself, I couldn't be paying £1k+ a year for servicing plus I enjoy doing it in a therapy kind of way...

There isn't one .... best bet call Tom at Snells in Alton and he will give you an honest price, they do all my Ducati servicing and have some of the best techs in the south in their workshop.

These things need to be looked after by people that know what they are doing, only other people that I will let spanner my bikes are Rich at LouigiMoto, Rick at JHP or Neil at Cornerspeed but all those need transporting to as not local.

.
This. They did my 1098R last year and were pretty reasonable considering.

I never understand why people think that working on a Ducati is so different to working on any other machine!

It's not black magic/rocket science/some other literary device.

Take it apart carefully, put it back together again properly; make sure the tight things are as tight as the manufacturer says they should be, make sure the gaps between things are as big as the manufacturer says they should be.

Simples!

Indeed but you do realise the engine architecture is a tad more complicated than a standard Jap IL4 ???

No one is challenging that, no idea why you are so angry, maybe pop the can of red stripe down and step away from the screen.

Haha, no, not angry, laughing at other people's incompetence paranoia.

All of these highfalutin machines we are so sacred off were (on the whole) designed and built by other human beings; just about anyone can service or rebuild them witha biot of time, patience and the correct tools and instructions.

Google the four stages of learning.

I’m well aware of the four stages of learning, I’m also well aware of what I have a natural,
affinity for and what I don’t and spannering is not on that list, also one needs to take into account the time / cost equation and for me I’m more time poor than cash poor so why would i flog myself doing something I don’t enjoy and am not very good at when someone else has the talent and gets paid to do it.

Do you service all your own machines then?
