Very interesting!

For those that haven't seen it, this is the Honda solution:

Shortly before Marc smashed it to bits.

Oh... Reminds me of the Nakamoto story that Honda developed aero that had a significant benefit, creating downforce and stability. However, it made things physically harder for the rider, as maneuvering the bike required more strength and it was not practical for the rider for a full race.

Looks like Yamaha win on the aesthetics of the new fairings then

yes they may not look eye catching but interesting to see how they are going about getting around the new regs with regards to wings

Maybe that'll lead to stroger heavier riders as more power becomes pointless due to keeping fron wheel down, though a heavier stronger rider could handle more power, depends how much of an advantage they can find with aero i guess..

The aero technology is interesting, but I fail to see how we can expect to see any of it trickle down and apply to road bikes - other than make them uglier.

Is none of this on BT Sport? I looked briefly, didn't seem to be.

ZX12? H2? Kawasaki loves that stuff. Ironically they're not in MotoGP to tricle down their aero from the street to the track ha ha.

Oh yeah and the Aprilia RSV1000 had Honda-ish hand things fifteen years ago.

The H2 was out before wings debuted in MotoGP. They have benefits, but I suspect they were driven more by aesthetics than the tech we are seeing being deployed on the MotoGP circuit. The riders have said the aerowings makes the bikes incredibly hard/physical to turn compared to bikes without wings, so I'm not sure how that is going to be a good thing for bikes on the road.

Not strictly true.

Yamaha used them as far back as 1999 (in fact I think the old Roberts team with Rainey in the seat experimented with them even earlier in the 90s). Ducati had their winglets out in 2010, and I seem to recall the Cagiva 500s had them at some point too. Even Sheene's Suzuki in '79 experimented with them...

Interesting that the winglets have become more popular now that in the past when they have been tried. More power may be a reason?

I'd say so yeah, as power and tyre technology have increased, so has the desire to try and keep the nose down without resorting to killing spark, fuel or ignition timing which hurts laptimes.

Thanks - I stand corrected thumbup

Mainstream wise... not seen any, other than the H2? (and I wouldn't really call the H2 mainstream given its rarity!)

Kawasaki ZX12R is about the only other one I can think of.

I'm sure the huge advance in computer technology and wind tunnels helps to an immense degree as well.

I test-rode one of those once, still don't know why I don't own/haven't owned one. Although I do remember overtaking something on the M25 during my test ride, glancing down at the speedo, and thinking "whoops!" nuts
