Wondering if anyone has had the same problem, I rode my 2003 Kawasaki Z1000 to work the other day but stopped off at Tesco on the way, It felt fine, nothing out of the ordinary. came out of Tesco turned the key and the dial flickered on and off as with neutral light, but no normal fuel pump noises or anything. it did this a few times till it eventually went completely dead. nothing works at all, no lights, nothing. I've checked everything that would be obvious, the side stand switch not sticking, kill switch isn't on, checked all the fuses under the seat and there all fine and checked the main 30A fuse under the side panel that was fine (even swapped it for a new one just incase) and still nothing. I've not had the bike long but the bike is in other wise great condition, mint infact. just hoping I can get it sorted and its not gonna cost the earth because I love the bike. would be very grateful if someone could shed some light on the situation. thanks in advance.

Obvious thing is loose battery terminals, goosed battery or poor earthing somewhere.

Yeah, battery would be the first place to look.

I recently had to repair the wiring on my Tuono as my battery was completely discharging, discovered the wiring from reg/rec had shorted on the frame and was placing a constant draw on the battery.

Yes. The same batteries also usually 'charge up' on a charger in 15 mins instead of several hours

Have you got a circuit tester?

Try disconnecting the negative battery terminal and then completing the circuit by placing the circuit tester inline between the negative battery terminal and the cable.

You should probably see a small consistent draw which would then go up a bit when you switch the ignition to the on position.

I've got to admit i wrote the idea of the duff battery off as i just couldnt understand how it could be ok one minute and knackered the next but i went to check the battery and noticed a load of discharge all over the + terminal so just out of interest i connected my optimiser to it and the bike came to life... it still wouldn't start but it's looking like the battery was the problem. I'll get a new battery from halfords in rhe morning and try that and let you know the outcome. Cant thank you guys enough! 1 more question though, do new batteries come with a full charge or do i need to charge it up 1st?
Thanks again.

They are pre-charged but can sit on the shelf for some time so they always recommend you charge before use. But it'll normally be fine.

Once it's going again make sure to check your reg/Rec and stator as a fault there could have knackered your battery and if so will do so again.

I don't know about your Kawasaki but I had a similar (though intermittent) problem with my 916. It was a failing ignition relay, would usually be OK once running but once off and trying to restart would get nothing.

New relay cost about £6.
