At present I have no security for my bike other than the immobiliser and the steering lock. I don't think I'll be using the bike for shopping trips and the like so I don't want to carry a heavy chain around with me all the time but I think some sort of disc lock would be a good idea.

I've had a bit of a look around and they seem to vary massively and I don't know if the cheap ones are something to avoid or the expensive ones aren't worth the money? The only thing I know is I want one with a reminder cord fitted.

Can anyone recommend a disc lock please? Budget is available to get what is necessary.

What bike is it for? Some won't go through disc depending on bike model. I like squire.

Or abus at another step up in price but you'd want to make sure it fits first

I have to have one as condition of insurance, when leaving my MV anywhere. Have an Abus alarm one similar to this, about £100

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Abus-Detecto-Motorbike-Al...

check the Abus website first for sizes/model differences to be sure you get one that fits on your discs

...its better than nothing if you leave it outside shops/car park etc, at least it makes a noise whilst its being nicked.....

Thanks guys, i forgot the bike. It's an mt07.

I don't have any insurance conditions but the alarm one sounds like a good idea. I might have to have a trip to a shop to have a look and check fitment.

What's wrong with Oxford?

The Oxford Alarm disc lock seems pretty decent..

I have an abus 8077, also have an abus detecto 7000 which I used for a while before giving to wife.

The 8077 is built like the granite mentioned earlier but has an alarm like the 7000. Its chunky and heavier but not much bigger.

I bought it from this Spanish site with a chain, took a over a week to arrive but it's a lot cheaper.

I have this Abus Disc lock alarm, and it is very good as it has gone off while people have been 'inspecting' the bike.

It's worth checking that the lock you're going to buy does actually fit on your bike. Some locks fit better than others.

When you get a lock, get one that is Thatcham approved. While the approval process is far from perfect, it is currently the best, repeatable, independent testing method there is and is so much more reliable than advice like "don't buy that one as my mates granny had her bath chair nicked when it had one of those fitted"!

I've got a Xena alarmed disc lock. I hardly ever use it as the key gets jammed & is a right fiddle to unlock. This makes the alarm to go off, almost causing deafness in the process. It is very sensitive to movement - even wind can set it off...
Oh, & Oxford products seem OK to me - I've got a Stormex cover & a rain jacket which are fine.

I'm a big Abus fan.

Having assisted a few folks who have lost keys, had bikes stolen/recovered, had locks jammed or glued etc, I think Abus are the most reliable (never seen one jammed unless it was deliberately glued) and they're definitely one of the hardest to break or cut off.

Just don't lose the keys...

Is that a disk lock that's permanently fitted to the top of your caliper?
Interesting..

I use the big Squire padlock from my Almax through 1 of the discs, tight fit but a grinder isn't going to get to it & would have to cut all the way through the lock to get it off, cant access the top part at all with anything that would cut or grind.

I use my old Oxford Monster disc lock on the other side which could be cropped off in seconds.

They’ll probably just grind through the brake discs as that’s much easier and delivers the same result.

Well you seem to think they do with two disclocks and your concern about grinders.

I've got a similar one

Quite bulky and heavy but better safe than sorry. Alarm is quite loud.

Yeah I do as I use/need the bike every day to get to work so better safe than sorry.

Old Chinese proverb - Better to put 2 locks on a sh*t bike than to have 2 locks and no sh*t bike & have to get the train.
