Yamaha have released some details about their new three-wheeler "Niken" and I'm not sure what to make of it.

Before I bought a bike a couple of years ago, the idea of a three-wheeler really appealed, primarily as I wanted something I could park in bike spaces at work, and I was scared of losing control of a normal bike in poor conditions. Now, after a couple of years of experience I don't think I'd want a three wheeler primarily because of it's width, and the inherent issues that presents when filtering.

The Niken appears to be aimed at those who'd generally be looking at bigger bikes, it's fairly distinct from the Piaggio MP3 for example, but who exactly are Yamaha aiming for with this bike? People who like me were once scared of big bikes? People who are getting on a bit and want more stability? Will it require an A licence or can you get straight on with a car licence? I'm a little puzzled, yet intrigued. Would you consider one?

I'd like to know how far beyond 2 wheel limits you can push them before you actually crash by loosing the front smile Maybe we'd need our resident 'racers' here on BB to test it on track?

Strange how it needs a stand with two wheels at the front. You would think it would be redundant.

I do!

I'm desperate for a Morgan 3 wheeler. Not the new one with the MX5 gearbox a proper JAP engined one.

Tell me this doesn't look fun: https://youtu.be/D_GYGAZMgRE

It'd be a right kick in the bks come fork service time wouldn't it, let alone sticking some Ohlins / K-tech internals in there for track use!! hehe

It's good to see Yamaha bucking the trend again - think TDR, GTS and really the whole MT range being ahead of the game but timed right. Can't help but admire it and I think it looks right for what it is.

Can't think who would buy one of these, perhaps if they follow it up with a T-Max version (Tri-Max?).

As much as I'm not a GS fan, I'm sure if BMW made a GS based version trike like this it would sell - think more quad bike front end though.

I think it looks amazing. Bold. And the wheels are perfect for people like me, who are always afraid to lose the front on slippery surfaces.

I drove the first MP3 (250cc) in 2007 in Greece, and had an amazing time. It's so stable that I could back it in and drift it out of corners. I reckon this bike will make normal people feel like they are heroes, even though we are not.

I like the concept and benefits for an all weather commuter could be worthwhile....however i want to see how wide it is. Most trikes ive got stuck behind in traffic just appear to have the downsides of both cars and bikes.

If its too wide to filter on, its going to be a frustrating commuter, you may as well be sat in a warm car......

Not forgetting its predecessor the Regal Reliant, and the closely related Bug Bond. smile

Americans? Since they arent allowed to filter anyway.
