2006 Aprilia RS125 failing to start

Evening gents,
I have a 2006 Aprilia RS125 which I've had sat in the garage for a year. When I initially bought the bike it was running well for the first couple of months before it started to act up and kept cutting out, eventually failing to turn over.
I changed the battery which managed to get it running again, though it was very hesitant ticking over at idle, and would cut out if I didn't give it any revs. I can hear the starter motor ticking when I attempt to start the bike, but it just isn't firing up!
I know these bikes are very temperamental and I'm a complete beginner on 2 stroke Aprilia's. Any advise/ideas on where to start would be much appreciated!

I haven't had the carbs cleaned yet, I'm planning on cleaning the carbs, changing the spark plug, and putting fresh fuel & oil in. I've never gotten my hands dirty before and don't want to cock it up more than it already is so some pointers on how to get about it for a beginner would be appreciated!
They are temperamental things. I had lot of niggles keeping my GF's one going when she had it.
2 strokes can eat plugs for fun so as above, check it's getting a fuel and spark. They can perish the inlet manifold rubber too so if it runs, but runs rough try spraying carb cleaner/easy start or similar on the carb rubber. If the revs rise you have an air leak and it needs the rubber "fixing" (if it's small you can get away with hightemp silicone but it'll be a temporary fix) or it'll need a new rubber.

Absolutely this. I’d put strong money on a new plug curing the issues. I used to actually keep one under my seat along with the tools to change it at the roadside as you never knew when it would next fail!
