Hello

I'm contemplating getting a bike to do my short commute on. I quite fancy the look of the Herald / Bullit / Mutt / AJS / Mondial bikes, but as they're relatively new I'm wondering if they are any good?

I like the look of the scrambler style ones. There is a few dealers local, but after much googling I can't find any information of whether they're like the Chinese bikes of old (rubbish/rusty) or the British/Italian tinkering makes them better?

Thanks!

Sorry ive no idea but I hope so, the Hero in particuar is a fantastic looking thing IMHO

IIRC the engine is a direct copy of the Suzuki GN125 in many of these bikes, so that bit SHOULD be OK .

That's the one that I'm leaning towards... It does look great!

A lad at work bought a bullit scrambler looking thing.
He's done under 1000 miles and it's constantly got some electrical problem. He's had it back to the dealers 3 or 4 times already.
It's pretty, but ultimately it's still Chinese crap.

They look good, but surely a lightly-used Grom would be a better bet?

Not quite as cool, but still great fun.

They look quite funky, but at 6ft1 and “powerfully built” (a bit chunky!) I fear I’d look like an elephant on a toddlers tricycle!

125 Varadero? It's not sexy, but it's one of the bigger 125s and it'll be better made than the Chinese offerings.

Personally, I'd forget about a geared 125 unless it had a 2 stroke engine in it. Get a scooter, forget about what you look like and how people on here might judge you and enjoy the better weather protection and zippiness. Bigger wheel scooters are better for longer distance so maybe something like an SH125.

The problem with those bikes is that while they look quite good they won't be particularly well built. If you must have gears, get a CG 125 or something like that. You won't look cool but you'll never look cool on a 125 anyway, at least it will be virtually indestructible.

Suzuki motor will be fine, it's the quality of the rest of the bike I'd be worried about

Chances are they just bought the worn-out tooling and carried on using it... It won't be spectacular, but what 125 is?

ah right, I'd buy a main brand bike anyway
the new Kawasaki z125 looks decent and you'd get full dealer support

What about a Suzuki RV125?

Her indoors had one when she was learning to rids and it was a hoot.

She used it in all weathers and it was utterly reliable.

Some of the fasteners went a bit scabby faster than I had hoped, but that could easily have been prevented with the application of some WD40.

And it would stretch chains as though they were made of knicker elastic.

Apart from that, it was faultless. Big wide bars, big comfy saddle and even a little rack on the back.

It was quite a sizeable bike, so I didn't feel like a complete spanner when I rode it.

It always generated loads of positive attention and people were falling over each other to buy it after she had passed her test.

To be honest, I quite regret selling it.

Good bikes other than the chain but that's no big deal.
or original MSX125 should be a few used ones about?

The VanVan is so slow. I could just about reach 65 on it at a push

The herald, Mutt bikes are in Hayward’s motorcycles in Cambridge. They do look great but as mentioned before the finish is not great, and that is why they are so cheap.

Yep, they are a big and heavy bike (for a 125) so progress is pretty lethargic.

Popular with the ladies, for some reason.

Despite the fact that I'm a big hairy bloke, I found it quite charming.

Don’t really get why they buy these historical names and brand up a bike that’s completely unrelated like that. The original Mondials were gloriously detailed lightweight sports and GP bikes.

Would any of the current potential buyers of the ‘hipster’ new one know of the heritage?

Can’t really see the point of using the name unless you’re going to use the heritage, as Triumph have...
