4.3 Stop lamps
4.3.1 Presence, condition and operation
All stop lamps must be inspected. If you don't think the stop lamp is connected, you don't need to test it.
Stop lamps aren’t needed for motorcycles that:
- don’t have front and rear position lamps
- have had stop lamps permanently disconnected, painted over or masked
- can’t exceed 25mph
- was (sic) first used before 1 January 1936
- was (sic) first used before 1 April 1986 and has (sic) an engine capacity of less than 50cc

Really?

I don't think that was the intention. However, parts of the new MOT manual read like a Google translation from Old Welsh, so who knows? smile

The old manual is here >>>> https://www.mot-testing.service.gov.uk/documents/m...

Never understood this.

When I was looking at daylight mots for the track bike I couldn't believe that if you don't have any lights or indicators but have a stop light that would be a fail. Makes no sense to me.

It was always OK to have no stop lamp for a "daytime" MOT, but the old rules said "Stop lamps are not required to be fitted to vehicles used only during the hours of daylight, which are fitted with neither front nor rear position lamps.".

That wasn't a "reason for rejection" in the old MOT manual, and it's not listed as a "major defect" or "dangerous defect" in the new manual. The requirement for a "daytime" MOT is that the front and rear position lamps are not fitted or have been removed, are permanently disconnected, or are painted over or masked.

Took mine in the other week, has a clear tail light lens with a red bulb inside, so tail and brake lights illuminate red, all good or so I thought, but without a white light on the number plate its a fail, ........ pretty sure that was never checked on the old test.
