What anorak do we need to understand your question ?
None, leathers would offer better protection
My question(s) is(are) - anything specific I need to know if I'm looking for a 4XV?
I know about the original exhaust can & screen being must-haves, and I know the red ones are dearer for some reason, but that's about the limit of my specific knowledge at present.
1998 / 1999 model Yamaha YZF-R1 would make more sense.
Very comfy compared to modern sportsbikes. They do have a slightly odd bar angle which I like but some don't. Loads of grunt and lovely to ride on the road.
Problems will mostly down to poor maintenance. Check for seized (or removed) EXUP valve and out of balance / worn carbs. If it's more than 25k miles take it for a test ride and gas it then shut off in each gear to see whether the gearbox keeps each gear in and check for clutch slip. Check the rev counter doesn't show any fault codes / do anything odd. Oil light often stays on and a new level switch is £130. They are fairly simple to maintain other than that - mine is on 53k miles after being trackdayed to death and last saw an adult about 8 years / 30k miles ago although the forks have been leaking for 3 years now.
Original plastics are now hard to get so buy based on bodywork condition. I'm fairly sure you can still get hold of the black plastic battery tray / rear mudguard assembly new from Yamaha for about £100 if you fancy sorting out a bodged undertray but th original rear reflector and little bracket are now unobtainable new. If you're paying a premium for a mint uncrashed bike then ask the seller to remove the mid panels for a look at engine / radiator etc and check the date codes on the panels - they should be from before the bike was registered obviously.
Don't pay too much, people have gone mad with the whole modern classic thing and then they complain it doesn't sell. 1998 white and red one with the red seats commands a premium but the very plain 98 blue one is much cheaper as is the red, white and black 99 model and the 99 blue one with the white triangular graphics. The fairing lower near where your shin would be when riding it should not have a NACA duct in it - this is a feature of the next model (5JJ 2000-2001) but the cheapy Chinese bodykits use it as a common part between the two.
Post a piccie / link of a bike you're looking at and I'll put my anorak on and rip it to bits.
Speaking of which.

Says a Ducatisti where everything is 1098RRsp SE Corsa SP!
Firstly, I don't have a 4xv, but do have a 5pw (bought because millenium era superbikes fit quite well and I didn't want to f
k around with carbs). I'm also 6'3". It fits nicely.
Echo what's said above about the exup valve - there's no way I can maintain mine - all the bolt heads are corroded to f
k and the only way it's coming apart is if it falls apart or I drill the bolts out. Which I'm not doing until it seizes.

Felt monstrously fast back then, had it jetted & a fancy full system on it though. I’m 6ft 1 & it fitted me like a glove, did 15,000 miles in 2 and a half years...hooning, track days, trips abroad. Loved it. Mine was red/black/white & to my eyes looked amazing. Got rid as it was getting tired and my eye was turned by an Italian. Go for it OP, lovely machines, even through a rose tinted visor.

Well, I've gone and done it. 98 Model 4XV in red & white:

The side panels and the belly pan in that pic are chinese copies. You can see a slight colour difference and one or two of the bolt holes don't line up. HOWEVER - I got the originals, proper Yamaha parts with the 4XV stamping on them, with the bike. Apparently the bike fell off the stand, so there is a crack around one indicator hole and a scuff on the belly pan ad the chinese panels were put on with a view to getting the originals sorted. Nothing particularly dramatic to patch up and repaint. I also got a spare tank, in red.
I don't like the exhaust (although it sounds good!). I got a Scorpion can and link pipe with the bike, and I'll probably keep an eye out for an original titanium pipe.
Similarly the indicators - not lovely, but I got the original fronts. Just need to find some rears. And lets not talk about the heel plate
But that's all cosmetic and I have most of what I need to sort that. It rides very well. The owner before the guy I bought it off said the forks have Ohlins internals - maybe, maybe not. Essentially, for a 20 year old bike, it runs and rides nicely, there are no rev counter errors, and I have a stack of spare/original parts to go with it, so I can slowly tidy it up and put it back to where it should be. Really pleased with it.

The titinum is from the Y2k model, you want the Carbon one for your year model.

Cheers BN. Still finding my way on specs, I thought there was an option for either. I'll look for a carbon one in that case! The titinum is from the Y2k model, you want the Carbon one for your year model.
Mine does have carbon infills which are 4XV-stamped on the back, so that makes sense.
Looks great, well done! I had a Blue 98 which I loved. Got it to 98,000 miles commuting all year round in all weathers. Was trying for 100k, but wore it out; the engine was still good but it needed double spent on it that it was worth, so called it a day. the only issues I had with it were electrical connectors coroding due to damp. Would love another but soon they won't be legal to ride in London due to emmisions.

I could be persuaded to be relieved of mine for the right price

6'3" is easy on one of these; they're pretty spacious and by modern standards are real comfy buses. Here's Mrs DS with her 1999 model (so less valuable than the previous years, sadly); she's 6'3" and mostly legs and she does OK, here she is...

I'm currently engaged in tidying this up a bit; just ordered a new rear seat (the black one is tatty), getting the wheels powder coated (previous owner did them yellow! WHY?!?!
) and it needs a new radiator so I'll get that re-cored in the next few weeks. It's got 40K on it now and still runs like a swiss watch. Great bike; I love how it can burble round and doesn't need to change down - it has so much more low down grunt than the new one)/
When I've got it sorted I'll see what we can sell it for as she fancies a change.

All mickey taking aside, I love how helpful this place can be .. thats a cracking bike Cappo .... really like that ..... just need to buy a 2nd seatpad and get it recovered in red .... ;-)
Interesting yes - I need to find out whether it was originally red & white, or white & red
- I think that's the differentiator for red seats vs black? I do want to return it to fairly close to standard. I've got the red tank as well as the white one on it. Tom, I may be in touch

And eventually I may need an unhacked undertray - looks like they're mortgage money too though.

Tucked in my loft is an unused shock for a 2000 R1, a few panels and a radiator.
I sold my 2000 R1 with an ohlins on and the original shock had done no miles. Put them all on gumtree and no takers, so I guess stuff for these bikes can't be too sort after

You interested in selling - especially the rad. What colour are the panels? PM me if so!
