For people mostly 50+ a lot of us had sports mopeds back in the day when we were 16. One was a Gitane Champion which my dad bought me and was brand new which I wrote off after 4 months of being on the road and then as there was still too much time till my 17th birthday I bought a s/h Fantic Chopper for £200, great condition, sold it for £150 nearing my 17th birhday to fund a S1 Kawasaki 250. Even though S1's seem to fetch good money they probably full short of what a Fantic Chopper makes these days going by ebay recently.
So with fizzies and AP50's also costing big money now I think it's fair to say relatively speaking sports mopeds have gained the most ££££ since them smokey 70s days. How much did you sell your sports moped for?

I was just a couple of years too young , worked at a bike shop for a saturday job, , and raced schoolboy MX on sundays
in the late 70s, the law had changed by the time I was 16 both moped law and the up to 250 at seventeen so I ended up with a DT 50 yam restricted to 30 , as it looked like a proper not having the peddles , soon had the restrictor out of the pipe a bigger carb etc, I went miles on that bike , traded it for suzuki ts125 .. Happy days ...

Not a sports moped, but my brother and I had a Mobylette field bike about 20 years back. Think we sold it for 20 quid.

My dad very kindly gave my 1976 Suzuki AP50 away for nothing when I left home. He was a very generous man.😣

Batavus a Dutch firm if my memory serves me right?

No sooner than I started this thread and head out to Copdock Bike Show and there's a Gitane Champion and Fantic Chopper on a stand albeit the Gitane was red where's mine was blue but a bit of a coincidence nonetheless.
Apologies for my bad photos.

I currently have a Fantic Chopper moped, a Garelli Tiger Cross and a Cimatti Kaiman, all 70s sports mopeds in mint condition.
They for some weird reason hold much more money than bikes like my also current RD250E or Honda CBR250R. The latter (grey import from Japan) revving to a faintly absurd 19,000 rpm.

I sold an AP50 Suzuki for £6,250 in May this year and a Fantic Chopper moped for £8,800 in January. For some reason the far, far better Fantic Chopper 125 fetches less money even though it is superior in every single way.

I bought my 1979 Blue FS1-M 2GO for £110 and sold it for £100 a year later in the early 1980's.

This is my 1977 2GO that I have owned for the past 10 years.

Nice bike, For some reason though the 50cc motorcycles fetch nothing like the money a pedal version does. No rhyme or reason. I bought a Fantic GT 50 without pedals for just £1,200 last year yet a pedal version in the same condition would have been £4,000.
There is definitely a mark-up on value big time for the pedal bikes. I've always loved them since my first one way back when, a Puch VZ50.

If anyone fancies reliving their youth (or their dad's youth!) i have a mint Garelli Tiger Cross, £3,500 spent on total nut and bolt restoration, which is now up for sale at £5,000 if anyone wants a solid investment as well as a very tasty little sports moped.
As close to a new bike as you will find.

Still got mine, although it’s a little earlier (1959).

Got some piston rings arriving soon hopefully, aiming to get it running again this winter. Been stood for 20+ years!

At the time paying £100 seemed an awful lot of money to a young BN.

I wasn't that fussed about bikes until all my mates started getting mopeds and I thought peddling my push bike was too much like hard work

I reckon Z900s are the kings of ROI comparing new prices to current, but 50s do seem to make stupid money. It's the Stafford Show this weekend. I'll take some pics of the ones that stand out as craziest!

In 1987 i had a Brough Superior SS100 that was in such a poor state i let it go for £5,000. In 2017 it fetched £110,000.
The Fantic Chopper moped was £289 in 1974. A mint one is worth £10,000 now. The FS1E was £149 in 1973. A mint one fetches £7,000. Crazy but nothing like the Brough Superior. In reality a pretty awful bike but rare as hen's teeth. £30,000 for the best BSA 500 singles is fairly mental too.

The Z1A is worth way more than a Z900 actually and was a lot cheaper new in 1972, when ''Double overhead camshaft'' on the side blew minds and wallets alike. £20,000 for a mint Z1A now.
