South Africa ADV trip
Discussion
My girlfriend passed her test recently so we popped over to SA for little riding around in the middle of nowhere hoping not to die in the desert!
Video for those interested in all things dual sport/ADV/African/dusty.
Only bought the camera and iMac a couple of weeks before the trip with little idea how to use either....so did my best! Part 2 will be slicker

Different schools of thought on their benefit. In theory, they stop the helmet moving too far in any direction. Thus preventing neck injuries. They certainly do that, you can’t move your head through extreem range of motions.
The down side is a) they put loads elsewhere, most obvious is the clavicle. There are tales of people having a minor off that would have been ok, but snapping the clavicle.
And b) they restrict movement, add weight, etc
For me, I’ll take an increased risk to a clavicle over a decrease risk to the spine. And ours are good bits of kit that add little weight and I don’t notice at all.
I’ve had a few minor offs that have included head strikes with the floor and my head has very obviously not been snapped back in a way I know it would have been without it. Whether being snapped back would have meant anymore than a stiff neck the next day, who knows.
