Hi All,

I'm looking at making arrangements for 3 people (on bikes) to visit the TT in 2020 and was wondering where to start with it all?

I'm aware that booking for the ferry opens on 20th May 2019 so that will be the first thing to sort.

I think camping is going to be the order of the day and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for sites?

Any other help with organising the trip would be most welcomed.

Cheers

Get your ferry ticket sorted as soon as they open. Don't leave it a day or two. All the sociable times get snapped up and although you'll get a crossing after a few days, it'll be 3am or something annoying.

Once you've done that, get online and find a campsite. There's always space. Decide if you want to take a tent, or book a pre erected one. If there's a few of you, you might be able to get a house, many residents let their house out over the TT period. I've stayed at Union Mills, and at Onchan a few times. Both great.

Practice week is quieter, less knob heads around. Race week is busier obvs. A good compromise is the back end of practice week and the first couple of days of race week. Works well.

That's pretty much it. Pack light, service your bike, put new tyres on it, and enjoy.

As far as campsites go, we've camped on two, Glen Lough and the Peel commissioners site in ,err, Peel.
Of the two we preferred Peel, for the following reasons, less pitches so it's easier to use shower blocks, toilets, etc.
It's within easy walking distance of shops, pubs and eateries.

Glen Lough is right on the course so be prepared to be woken up at stupid 'o' clock by McPint wannabes.
Glen Lough have a large overflow field, which they easily fill, unfortunately there are no extra showers, so be prepared to queue!

I have a friend who goes every year and camps at Peel football club, he sings it's praises!

As with everything TT, book as early as possible!

If for some reason you fail to book places for the TT, don't forget about the Manx GP/ Classic TT, they're worth going to.
Same sort of atmosphere, just less people and consequently fewer knob heads!
The only downside is the weather can be fking awful, I'm talking painfully cold for August, especially at Cronk-y-voddy, guess how I know!

Ferry tickets will open from late November / beginning of December, you can register your interest now and they will contact you to book, if you wait till next year to book the ferry you won't get a crossing.

Try Glen Wyllin campsite in Kirk Michael ,pub close and local shop , Silly Moos up by the conkerfields is also a good site, only a mile or so outside Ramsey.

Thanks for the replies. Very helpful.

Ill try and get on the ferry mailing list asap then.

What sort of process do you think ill be looking at for ferry, camping three nights?

That was the other question, when's best to go.

Thanks again.

If you're only going for three nights, what do you want to see, full blown racing or just practice?

If you were to go for three nights, the end of race week would be my choice, Wed, Thurs and Fri, I doubt you'd need to book the camping in advance. Towards the end of race week a lot of people have already gone home, (presumably to avoid the rush), and the campsites will have thinned out noticeably!

All of this could be academic, especially if there's a group of you all wanting the same crossings.
The steam racket online booking system is extremely clunky, you'll need one device per person, each with the booking form filled in, when you are all ready, each of you will have to hit their own "submit" button simultaneously!
Assuming you all manage to book the same crossings you'll then have to wait a few months to find out how much you'll actually be paying for the, said, crossings!

I've never done it myself, but it might be a less stressful process booking it through one of the Manx travel companies.
I'm only guessing but I assume they must block book some of the places on the ferries.

Good Luck!

The above is one of the reasons I've started going to the ManxGP/Classic TT, it's just less hassle!

Is that right? I've never seen any option to book/register interest before May (for the following year)?

Well from their website (https://www.steam-packet.com/) bookings open from the 29th October, it is my understanding that you can pay a deposit / provisional booking and then they seek to get the full payment in January.

Bookings for the following TT week open pretty much just after the current TT, you pay a deposit, and then have to settle the balance in the new year. any not paid for get re released in March time. That's the way it's always been.

It does say that (I never realised!), though I suspect that doesn't apply to TT week. As mentioned earlier the bookings for those 2 weeks are up for reservation from the Monday before practice week, for the following year.

I think the deposit is about £20 from memory

Good luck if you ring up the 29th and are allowed to book and only pay a deposit,I've booked many times for the manx as soon as
the ferries are out and have never been given that option, always full payment at time of booking

Do you know anyone who has managed to do this ?

The TT bookings allow you to pay a deposit with the balance due the following February

Don't know if its worth throwing my 2p worth in, but after a conversation with Manx Ferries on Friday, their CS guy told me that deposits are payable on booking (May 19) and balance due (Nov 19) when prices are released?

Must admit, it seemed a strange way of doing things, but that the message I got.

Thanks again for all of the info.
