I swapped from superbikes to a BMW GS 1200 about ten years ago, and every few years have swapped to a newer one, with each being a decent improvement on the one before.

I quite fancy the new 1250 Rallye version, but wonder if I’ve just got stuck in a rut and should be looking at something a bit different.

I don’t do that many miles a year, but might do one big European trip, go the length of the country once a year, use it to go shopping a bit and do the odd track day.

I like that it’s for of a do-everything bike, like the engine, and the handling, and don’t know what else I should look at.

The only real negative is that it’s a pain in town. It’s far from the best for right filtering, so I never use it for the commute.

What other bike would be as good all-round, while definitely being no slower?

I’ve not been there in a while. Too cliquey.

I should give the KTM a try, and maybe a Multistrada.

As you appear not to do any off-tarmac riding then I'd suggest the KTM SuperDuke 1290 GT.

The GS is an incredible all rounder. Fast or slow, solo or 2-up with luggage, trackdays or broken b-roads or green lanes, the GS does it all. The one thing it isn’t, is compact and nimble/light. The outgoing 1200GS is a formidable machine. The 1250 does move performance on with greater refinement, but I think the additional cost to change if you do not do lots of mileage, is better put towards a second smaller bike to complement the GS. A GS+smaller naked or GS+sportbike is a great combo.

Instead of upgrading for the new models,

No space to park any more, unfortunately. Two cars and two bikes (well, one and a scooter) is the limit.

I’d like a Ducati scrambler or something similar, but it’s got to be one bike at a time for now un,was I give up the scooter, which I’m not likely to do.

You’re right, it’s a fair while now since I’vevused any of them off road.

I did some very foolish things in the Alps on my first one, alone, but it’s all roads now.

Well in that case, the sky is the limit for other interesting bikes, even all rounders.

Try the big Duke GT. This years Tracer 900, MT10 Tourer, FJ, VFR, ZX14,GSX-S 1000 F, H2SX, K13, Sprint St, Z1000000SX, Ducati Supersports and Multis, even the old GT1000 Sport Classic is a lovely ride and practical to do big miles on.

You could argue the plus / minus points for each one. Take a few test rides and you'll know.

I never really had a problem with it while filtering. I found the high position made the job easier... as long as you don't have the side panniers on that is. It is bigger, but not that much bigger.

As a do anything that’ll give you more of a thrill, Definetly look at super adventure S and the GT as they are brilliant although I’d wait for the newer GT as the current one feels older generation to the adventure S, out of the two I test rode the super adventure s was the one I would get, as roomy and comfy as the GS but with serious go and handling

Not significantly better, as a filtering/traffic light GP tool.

No reason why not, I’m happy to consider anything.

One of the reasons that I think I might have got myself stuck is that I’ve decided since having a GS that I like the GS features, like telelever or whatever they call it now, shaft drive etc.

What I miss with the GS is the foot out, sliding the rear, lunacy of a supermoto, or the crazy top speed of a superbike.

As suggested above, I suppose that I just need to get out and try a selection. Still, it’d be good to narrow it down a bit so that I don’t wear out my welcome in too many dealers by asking to try everything that they have.

Something worth adding, one thing that I like about the GS is that I’m comfortable riding to the edge of grip, then a bit further, in a way that I never was on my Fireblade.

I’m happy to spin up the rear on the way out of a bend, and lock the front on the way in. This meant that the last time I was at the ‘Ring I was faster than a few of the riders on what should have been faster bikes.

I’m not sure what it is that gives me such confidence, the last time I felt like that wa son the original T595 Daytona.

It’d be nice if the next bike felt similar, I.e. had the feedback of an enduro bike when things break away.

No more room. Two cars, two push bikes a motorbike and a scooter, and the garage is full.

I went to Multistrada 1200S, and have to say that its a much more enjoyable ride when i twist my right wrist. everything else I pine for the old GS.
S1000XR maybe my next bike.

I chose the Ducati as it was much sportier to ride, and just as comfy in touring mode. that Skyhook suspension is excellent. Shame about the dealer network and overall quality of the switch gear.
