Hi.

Possibly my first time posting in this section. Just looking for some quick info on the CBT that I can't seem to confirm via google searching.

My wife booked me in for a CBT for my birthday which is in a couple of weeks. It's something I've talked about for years but never got round to it. Both nervous and very excited about the prospect of taking the CBT and getting on a bike. I've never ridden before.

As this was a surprise gift, I've had no time to prepare anything for it. The guys at the training centre have told my missus that all I need to take is my licence and some suitable boots. It's been arranged that I will be learning on a geared 125.

My question is that whilst I have a full driving licence with a category P (passed after 2001 so needs "activating" with CBT), I don't yet have a provisional motorcycle licence. Will I still be allowed to learn and take the CBT on the 125 or will I have to use a scooter due to my licence? Are there exceptions for those taking the CBT on what they are allowed to ride on the road?

No issue to use the scooter if needs be, just don't really want to turn up and make a cock of myself before I've even sat on a bike because I have the wrong licence for what's been booked...

Cheers lads.

If you have a full licence just take yourself and those boots.

You will be allowed out on a 125 geared bike if you pass the standard. There is no requirement to have even seen a motorbike before so you'll be fine

Provided you are over 17 and have a car license you will be fine to ride a 125 so you will be fine.

Enjoy the cbt, if you're over 24 they may even allow you out on a 600+. I did the road section of my cbt on an mt07.

I'm 33 but still, one step at a time!

Basically, you don't need a provisional.

I'd never been on a motorbike before but within 15 mins of being on the road I was doing 70ish down a dual carriageway.

It's fantastic fun, I'm sure you'll have a great day. Be prepared to roll your eyes at what some of the youths will come out with.

And be prepared for suicidal 16 year olds who haven't read the highway code, or even considered how traffic works.

On mine a lad rode straight out of a junction into a line of traffic on a 40mph road... Begging for a Darwin award.

Can't be much worse than some of the things I heard at a speed awareness course I attended last year!
