Illegal exhaust - impact?
Discussion
I have put a deposit down on the Norton Superlight. It comes with an EU compliant (and bulky exhaust). However, there is the option of a "race only" titanium exhaust (for a rather unhealthy uplift over the base price!). However, said exhaust saves 8kg (quite a lot on an already light bike), adds a few bhp (not sure I'd notice) but most crucially looks about 100 times better!!
What if I get the exhaust and ride on the road? How do declare it to the insurers (will it in any way invalidate the insurance)? Seeing as I don't seem to hold onto bikes not sure whether MOT will be a problem but presumably one would need to put on the standard exhaust to get it through?
Sorry if these are basic questions - I've only ever had legal exhausts on my bikes.

If it's a performance modification I would say you'd be best to let your insurance company know, they may not cover you for it.
If plod pull you for whatever reason most probably won't be interested, but some may be looking for EU markings/compliance etc and - "not for race use" stamped all over it.
As for MOT's, I don't think you can fail for a loud exhaust - it's all down to the discretion of the tester, but again if it's got markings regarding race use it may be a problem.
Is it a full system or just an end can? If an end can it won't take too long to swap back if required I'm guessing.

Sounds like a full system rather than the end can? MOT: There are no limits on sound levels and it is up to the testers discretion to determine whether it the noise emitted is acceptable (not significantly louder than how it would have left the factory). Providing it doesn't have 'for track use only' or words of that ilk stamped all over it you should be ok.. if it does have this wording you can put tape over it for the MOT - the testers are not allowed to remove it (apparently). Plod might take a dim view however if they want to find something wrong with the bike.
On insurance speak to a few insurers - it might cost you a bit more or it might not as it gives a performance gain, and you might just find that they will only replace with the standard exhaust in the event you bin it.

It is definitely a full system.
Will have to check. Apparently I will get invited to the factory to see the production version (and get to sit on it!) before I confirm the options and order. Don't expect that to happen until late next year.
Will try to test how loud it is as don't really want to be too anti-social.

All my bikes have non-original exhausts, all of which are louder (but not obnoxiously so) than the originals.
I have never had a problem with Police/MOT etc. and even when having been stopped by Plod for 'making progress', exhausts have never been mentioned, although I suppose they could do if they wanted to be arsey?
As for insurance, I have informed them of the change to aftermarket exhausts and I don't recall any insurance co. ever asking if they were road legal?
Infact my current policy is agreed value/custom and I have submitted detailed pictures of each bike to the insurance company, clearly showing the exhausts without them making any fuss.
I would imagine the main issue insurance wise would be cost of replacement in the event of loss? in which case they may only cover the cost of replacing a standard system, which for my bikes would likely be more than the cost of the aftermarket anyway.
