Safe boots that don't look silly with jeans?
Discussion
I've been looking for as safe a pair of boots as I can find to wear with fairly slim jeans. Can anyone help?
So far it's been two misses and one hit:
- The Rev'It Mohawk uppers and soles became worryingly soft after a few thousand miles, with the soles beginning to disintegrate at contact points with the pegs.
- I returned a pair of Daytona AC-Dry Gore Tex boots without even trying them on the bike.
- The Rokker Urban Racers after 5k are promising: very tough uppers and super rigid Vibram sole.
Has anyone found a pair they like?
Are there any sporty/aggressive looking boots that won't feel like gym shoes?
Thanks!

I tried a few pairs, but as per your experience some are a bit light, some are a bit short. For about 12 months now been wearing some Alpinestars which are higher leg with a zip and armoured, yet comfy like trainers to walk about in

I still have some boots to wear with full leathers on track, but the rest of the time these are my default choice with kevlar jeans.

My stock (but boring) answer is Alt Berg. Apart from one sock (on my left foot), they were the only bit of my kit to come out unscathed, bar a few scuffs that can be easily sorted with a bit of a polish. Alt Berg supply the MoD with boots for the military and they also supply lots of UK police forces, not only with motorbike boots, but patrol/public order boots and also stuff for firearms officers/dog handlers.
They’re pretty bulletproof, if a little (ok, very) dull. Fashion items they are not, but once they’re btoken in, they’re very comfy. I’ve worn them in the office all day with bike jeans and it was the jeans that were uncomfortable by the end of the day. They haven’t let a drop of water in while I’ve had them and I’ve commuted year round using them.

Another vote for the Rokker boots from me.

I also have two pairs of Styl Martin Indian Laces which are beyond a doubt the nicest and comfiest motorbike boots I have ever had; they are also waterproof. They look like smart boots and you can use them in the evenings to go out if you're on a road trip. I've a black pair in so-called "greasy leather" which look great and I've just got a pair in this sort of "vintage" brown leather that will scuff up; they're very stiff and shiny at the moment as I've not worn them on the bike yet.

Do you want something you can wear off the bike without them looking obviously 'odd' or are you just after a boot that doesnt look odd on the bike with jeans? So far it's been two misses and one hit:

I was in the same boat as you and looked at the 'hiking boot' style stuff but nothing I looked at actually seemed that protective and the soles can be really clunky making for a thick boot that I found hard to re-position when changing gear.
I ended up with the Alpinestars SP1 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZ4ATeINtgE - I wouldnt wear them to the pub but they are much more protective than the more fashion kind of boot, I am very pleased with them and cheaper than the nicer 'fashion style' boots too, my slim kevlar jeans go over the top no problem and stay put when riding.
I suppose it all depends on how / where you will ride while using them, I prioritised protection as where I live im out on A roads etc so at a decent speed right away, if I lived in a city squeezing through traffic I would think differently.

The Rokker boots that I have (brown versions of the one above) look great off the bike. Pop out the knee and hip pads and I have something that works well all day long. I've used them for everything for the last 5,000 miles including multi day treks. There is a lot of style with them but they are substantial boots.I was in the same boat as you and looked at the 'hiking boot' style stuff but nothing I looked at actually seemed that protective and the soles can be really clunky making for a thick boot that I found hard to re-position when changing gear.

If I could find better protection than the Rokkers I'd move to a boot that as you say, 'doesn't look odd on the bike with jeans'
The Aplinestars SP1 are good looking short boots: by the sounds of it they're better than those Daytonas I tried.
I forgot about the Styl Martin Indians Dog Star: I ordered those at the same time as the Rokkers but the Rokkers seemed to fit me better. I hadn't seen those Alpinestars Firm boots. They would've been contenders.
I hadn't even considered Alt Berg: Hoggs or Hogg Highs won't win beauty contests but maybe they're acceptable! They look slim enough above the ankles to hide under my jeans and if they're not too severe looks-wise maybe their utility would win me over. Which ones do you have Dibble?
So far: sporty SP1 vs utility Alt Bergs. Without trying the SP1s look great and it's impossible to know if they'd serve me better in an off than the Rokkers currently do. Probably impossible to tell in the flesh either but hey.

If you are looking to wear the boot all day long I would probably avoid the SP1 - it isnt particularly uncomfortable but the sole is quite stiff and does look more 'odd' of the bike that hte others - I wouldnt want to walk around all day in mine, I suppose you have to compromise somewhere though.
I’ve got the “less” fashionable (it’s all relative!) Clubman Roadster. Old fart boots to be sure, but I wonder if AltBerg would do them in brown leather? To be honest, all you see is the toe end off the bike, so it doesn’t really matter what the fastening/top looks like.
The “proper” motorcycle boots have the identical sole to the “hiking” style boots, so they are absolutely fine for mooching around all day in. Yes, they get warm in summer, but any boot, even a vented one I guess, would as well.
I quite like the Alpinestars boots above, but my concern would be just how much ankle protection they’d give in an off. I like the Rokker ones as well, probably a bit too trendy for me, but they definitely look good and I’ve heard good stuff about Rokker gear. MotoLegends seem to feature them quite a lot, so it may be worth a look at their website.

Alpinestars SMX-1R over here.

Initially I was looking for a more street style boot but ultimately given the purpose is for protection in an off, these were the right boots for me after trying lots, to wear with jeans. I have full height Sidi’s with leathers but find myself wearing jeans with the Alpinestars mostly. It’s a good balance, they have easy zip up sides and the jeans go over them so you only see the base anyway. Very comfy, had them over 2 years and no issues with wear, they’ve been great and feel like they’d give decent protection and support to the ankle.
Cheers

I've got a pair of these Alpinestars. Said to be waterproof but I haven't tested that. Very comfortable and easy to walk around in. Only quibble is that the area around the gear change is showing signs of wear, and I only bought them this year:

I have the exact same pair of shoes and the exact same problem with wear around the gearchange lever, mine area only a few months old, a bit disappointed in this wear, otherwise though, excellent shoes.
