MT09SP, MT10, 900GT or S1000r?
Discussion
HI all,
Would appreciate any advice please. After my first year of riding on my MT07 I’m looking to do longer tours next year. Thinking of either an MT09SP and fit a touring screen and top box or panniers or go for a 900GT. The 900GT wins on the practicality side especially with cruise control but undoubtedly isn’t the MT09SP the winner in terms of fun and value for money? Could fit luggage and a crampbuster cruise control fitting for the boring motorway slogs on the MT09SP. Budget is around 9K. However I’m really tempted to get a slightly older MT10 or S1000r, but would they are too much for a rider with only 1 years experience? Should mention I’m mid 40s with 25+ years car driving experience and quite a defensive/cautious rider. Very torn as the MT10 and S1000r appear to be a big step up in quality for not much more money than the MT09SP/900GT.
Cheers.

If you really wanted to you could add proper electronic cruise control to an MT-09 by shipping one of these from Australia

IMHO MT10 is too unhinged, I would buy S1000R, that’s a great bike in all respects, suspension, throttle response, sound, amenities (incl heated grips!), everything is top notch on this bike and it is a sweet ride. IMHO it’s a better choice for let us say beginners.
No, it will not be too much if you have control over your right hand and proper situational awareness.

I tried all those bikes plus a few more, RS Street and RS Speed Triples, MT10SP and I settled on the new KTM790 in the end. It was easily the bike that was the most fun, with just the right amount of power and torque for British roads. Its handling is superb and has an electronics package the surpasses all the bikes you mention. Give one a try, see what you think.
'Try before you buy' is always a good idea. Short list what meets your requirements both in practical terms and what appeals to your biking soul!
Then buy what you want,it's your choice after all.
I was in the same place as you a month ago, albeit different requirements and shortlisted KTM superduke R, MV Brutale 800rr and S1000R sport.I went with the S1000R in the end as the suspension and electronics package was for me the best of the 3.
Enjoy yourself when deciding, as motorcycling should be about fun.

I have an MT09SP and I wouldn't consider it to use as a touring bike, all the available screens are crap (including aftermarket) and the buffeting is horrendous over 80mph, the riding position is more like a motocross bike and there isn't that much legroom, they are a brilliant bike but the Tracer will be 95% of the fun and a lot more practical for touring, and can be had with cruise control.
As for the others, they are faster yes but the CP3 engine is all you'll ever need.

Seems rather expensive, could you not buy the OEM switchgear and loom for less?https://www.mccruise.com/products/yamaha-mt-09-tra...

How are you getting on with your suspension issues Jazoli? As for the others, they are faster yes but the CP3 engine is all you'll ever need.
A mate of mine is considering the MT09/MT09SP.
He's not as quick as you, but curious all the same.

I've not ridden the bike since September but it still weaves when I am going faster than I should be, its just a characteristic of the bike I guess as its not been widely reported by anyone else, I am running the bike quite soft at the front as its far too hard as standard but I think its just a combination of the riding position, the bikes geometry, the lack of fairing and the speed, it only really starts to get a proper wiggle on above 110 and its always when on the power driving out of bends so the front is pretty light and relatively unloaded, it becomes pretty unstable and I have to close the throttle to calm it down as I do feel its going to develop into a major tank slapper, its unusual as every other naked I've ridden at similar speeds has been rock solid, still its not a deal breaker and it does make me keep the speed down a bit, and I don't think it would be an issue for 90% of people who buy one

I've also found its restricted to 140mph, as it just stops dead in 5th or 6th, which is annoying when you are chasing someone

I still think the bike is great though and I would recommend one to anybody, the SP is a no-brainer for the few quid extra.

Cheers for the feedback mate. I think he's going to end up with Speed triple at this rate, but I'll mention it to him. I'm wondering if some of the handling issues would be remedied by him being a fat b

d.
That does sound quite frustrating though, especially if it's not widely reported (although I have read it elsewhere). I guess it's one of those things that you just learn to live with until it's time to chop it in.

That's exactly what I'll do, its on a PCP so I'm not throwing money at suspension mods or anything like that, It will be getting chopped for something else before the 3 years is up but I'm planning on keeping it for next year at least as the monthlies are pretty low anyway (well until the settlement figure matches the value anyway
)Absolutely love my MT09 SP. I've test ridden a MT10 SP and much preferred my 09... much easier to chuck around and have some fun with.
Having said that I don't think I'd want to tour on my 09, the standard seat is horrible for anything more than 100 miles and wind buffeting at speed is dreadful. I think i'd personally prefer a 900GT for that sort of use.
Colleague of mine has just bought his second S1000R and does european touring on that, seems happy enough with it.

Oh yeah the seat is pants, I ordered a Shad one the minute I got back from the dealers having picked the bike up, its immeasurably better and is all day comfy ish.Edited by Jazoli on Friday 21st December 06:44

I love my MT10 sp and let me tell you it can swallow MT09 sp's hairy and then spit them out baldy if It wanted too.
Thats more about the rider not the bike, I've ridden past a Panagle 1299 on the outside of a bend on my MT07, but I know thats not because the MT07 is a better bike!

I tested the Street triple RS and found it really buzzy. I bought an MT10 in the end funnily though. It just wants to wheelie everywhere and that noise. Once it gets a proper exhaust and a map into it I'm hoping it'll be even better.Gassing Station | Biker Banter | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
