I commute in on the m40 (but only from junction 3) into London but then as I teach yoga do have a few different journeys within the city - so around 70 ish miles round trip. My v workhorse Yamaha xjs diversion is an ‘11 plate but after doing over 100,000 miles! Has decided to bite the dust ( think the mechanic at the dealership is keen on me buying a new bike / said it was just going to cost too much as needed new cdi, sort out steering bearings etc) so - Any suggestions? Am thinking either the Yamaha tracer or Honda NC700x? Reliable, cheap to run, good for filtering etc.... am unsure whether to just get a new bike on finance or go 2nd hand (hassle of getting big cash together and going to god knows where to pick it up) - Any thoughts or suggestions v welcome! 🙏

Like you, I have a 100 mile a day commute into London.

Hvong ridden allsorts over the years, TDM900 is the best tool for the job, though now discontinued. Tracer is it’smodern ‘equivalent’, but not as good IMHO.

On a Honda CBF600 for my City commute which is near perfect for the job (only 25 miles a day in my case)

Reliable, cheap, not a theft magnet, 200 miles for £20, good for Filtering and pretty comfortable. I can’t complain.

thanx for the advice about the honda cbf600 and 650 (tdm900 would prob be too old, even if i found a 2nd hand...) - i am going to check out - prob test ride...my diversion was pretty upright riding position but with all those miles my neck would get pretty tense and i felt that ergonomically, i could have a better riding position so hopefully i can find that for next bike!

Meant to add that the NC750x is what I’d be looking at in your position (if new)

If you don't mind something a few years old, go for a deauville. Very comfortable, shaft drive, surprisingly good weather protection and cheap to run. Also only fill the tank every 3rd day.

Nc750x
Cb500x
Africa twin (more power and still thin enough for London)

Honda nc750 sounds like a good choice.
Bland commuter stying means there is no value to the chop and customize crowd or racing scene as spares.
Nice MPG figures and a helmet stash in the tank bit as well.

my old yamaha diversion was pretty good for filtering - just hope that the honda's aren't wider!

Then that's the bike you need. I had the nc700x and it was perfect for that. Better than my VFR.

If you’re going into central london, whatever you get, be mindful of the upcoming ULEZ changes that will affect bikes in April. I assume you aren’t going to go older than your old Divvy so you’ll likely be ok but some of the suggestions above would bit comply

Ive got a Deauville 650 and its a brilliant commuter. No one wants to nick it, great storage, shaft drive and easy to ride with great mpg.
and its less than £20 a month to tax AND insure
