Well, I went and done it last year.. took the K1200S to Germany and blasted a conrod out the front of the engine frown

I have been in mourning for the past year, bought a K1300S to cheer myself up, but the k12 is still sitting in my garage looking very sorry for itself.

The big question is... is it worth replacing the engine?
The bike is a 2005 model, with about 30.000 miles on the clock.
BMW don't do reconditioned engines, I don't have the skills to know what a good replacement engine would cost, or have the skills to fit one.
If I were to ask a reputable garage to source and fit, what sort of price? is it worth it?

I am pretty sure it was the cam chain jumping off that "sorted" the engine, as I was doing approx. 150mph in 5th in the outside lane of the autobahn, when the engine went very quiet and there was a massive amount of white smoke following me, probably from the oil leaking onto the exhaust.
Thank goodness for my £34 breakdown insurance, which got me a hire car (x 2) to get me from Gutersloh (Germany), to Calais, where I was then given a rhd car to get back to Dover and back home to Sheffield. The bike came home a few weeks after.

It is unlikely that a "fixed" K1200S will be worth the cost of replacing the engine unless you do all the work and put no financial value on your time. This means that replacing the engine simply to sell the bike is probably not worth it.

The fact that you already have a K1300S means that fixing the K1200S to use yourself is questionable. The K1300S is better at everything (except blowing up!!!) than the K1200S

Only you cans say if "it's worth it" but there is no logical reason supporting getting it fixed. If it were me Id break it for spares.

Yeah i'd do the same. It would only be worth fixing if you had some sort of massive sentimental attachment to it

Yep, break it for spares imho.

Buy yourself a cheap socket set and a few tools, take it slowly and carefully - whack it all on eBay.

Alternatively someone might make you a half-decent offer for it. I would but I haven't got room at the minute.

Wow, who was this with?

And agree on breaking for spares.

Where are you OP, and what would you be looking for in it’s broken state?

I am looking for a project that I can restore together with my teenage son, teaching him mechanics, that I can then use to commute on.

Martin.

Make sure you do your homework before buying a K1200S Very capable bikes but with the potential for some expensive issues.
