Weekend Trip Luggage
Discussion
Hello,
Just started to plan a little weekend trip up to Scotland with a mate setting off on a Friday returning the Monday.
Problem being I’ve never done any trips on the bike before so have no real luggage for such a trip.
I do want to get a Givi ST602 tank bag anyway so this is a good excuse to finally get one for Satnav duties and holding little bits etc.
But for the bulk of my things i have an Oxford B25 backpack but i don’t really want to be supporting the weight on my back all day i get the feeling it will start feeling pretty heavy and tiresome quick and restrict a my fun if any opportunity arises to make progress. So I’m thinking of getting a tail bag. I know the stock answer is Kriega but they are expensive for something i might use once or twice.
First question is size? Is 20L really enough or am i better with 30/40L remembering ill have 5 in the tank bag. And I’m only going to be throwing in there a waterproof over suit a change of clothes toiletries.
I see Autokicker have ripped off the Kreiga connectable bags on ebay are these absolute rubbish?
My next thoughts are a Givi 30L roll top

Or an Oxford Aqua T20

Any other bargains or options im missing or should I forget the weight on my back issue and use the backpack?

I have the Oxford one and it was fine for a weekend down to Hampshire.
Sits on back seat with strap under seat and then some stability straps to the rear foot plate hangers or other suitable fixing point. Stayed stable all the way but consider packing heavy stuff at the bottom and centrally so it sits on the seat. I can't confirm whether its watertight as it didn't rain.
Just check whether you can strap it down without running the straps over a hot exhaust. Mine was fitted to a Triumph Speed Triple with Arrows Low Boy exhaust and another was fitted to my wife's Triumph Street Triple with Arrows under seat exhaust as an example with no problems.
Oh and make sure you roll up the excess strap length and secure it or it may end up in the rear wheel!

Get one with big opening, otherwise you'd have to unload it all to get to stuff at the bottom.
40l should be more than enough for a weekend, I've got a 60l and that fits all my camping gear and enough clothes for 4-5 days.

Tail packs or roll bags are ideal depending on the available space you have (single seat, under seat exhausts etc).
I bought a no name 30l roll bag which has been great. Very simple to strap in place using either Rok straps or a cargo net. I also have an old tail pack with bungees going through it that works well. Either way, if you can, get the weight off your back. It works for some people but I'd avoid it for long journeys.
As to which one - Ortlieb, Givi, Lomo are all solid - it's down to budget. Kriega are brilliant but if you don't plan on using it much does sound like over kill.
Edited to add:
This is the bag that I bought:

The Lomo stuff is pretty competitive too:

credit card and spare pair of undies rolled up in a pocket, merino base layer used as a casual top with leather jeans - you'll look quite the part in the more trendy places (or an extra from a German porn movie) others places no one will care (in case you need to go out)

its only Scotland for 48 hrs

For what it's worth I do trips like this a few times a year typically to Germany
I use a kriegga us20 which is just about enough with all the clothes etc I want. I then have a phone holder on the bars which is more like a bum bag as I can put a few other bits in there too
In the kriegga I'll take usual emergency bits which I keep in a separate compartment. For me it's worked well having this setup

20l is easily enough for a weekend assuming you're not camping. You'll need two sets of underwear, two tee shirts, one pair of trousers, one jumper/fleece and one pair of trainers. For toiletries you'll need deodorant, toothpaste, a toothbrush and a comb. Pack toiletries into shoes and use socks to hold them in place. Roll your shirts, jumper and trousers into "tubes" and "fill the corners" of the bag with the appropriately sized roll.
I always line any luggage with a bin liner, regardless if it claims to be waterproof or not. It also allows dirty clothing to be in the bag outside the liner thus separate to clean clothes.
Put your valuables in the small tank bag and make sure you always take it with you. Again, line it with a small bin liner just to be 100% sur it's waterproof.
