KTM 790 adventure R
Discussion
Anyone else waiting for a look at one of these , i was tempted to get a 1090 but decided it was just a bit to big and tall for the sort of terrain and green lanes in the UK .. would keep my 350EXC for serious off road duties but something that would do distance and unmade roads would be good ...
Do you think the 790 is much smaller and lighter?
OK I have just checked and it is. Initial reviews were a bit vague and at the time I bought the 1090 in Aug 2018 the details on the 790 were very vague and unconfirmed.
790R 189Kg (dry) 825mm seat height 95bhp (weight varies depending on the site from 170-190kg)
1090R 207Kg (dry) 890mm seat height 125 bhp
I bought the non-R 1090 in the end due to the seat height (850mm) and fitted the Powerparts seat which is lower still. It's still a beast though and the weight is high up. I have ridden the 790 Duke and the engine pulls well so I would be interested in getting a test ride on a 790R if I get the chance!

I had a sit on one of these at the Montreal Motorcycle Show last Saturday. There was a lot of interest, and probably the highlight of the show for me.
It's a great looking bike, although the headlight may not to be everyone's taste. What struck me though is how it's packaged. The fuel tank is a very long horseshoe shape, dropping down right next to your knees. This makes it feel quite narrow, and lets you get really far forward over the tank when standing. When sitting too, you can get really far forward.
The bike was bolted in place so I couldn't get a real sense of the weight. The seat height was also surprisingly low. It felt lower than my F800GS - it was a pre-production bike, but I was assured that's the final height. I have a 32" inseam and could comfortably touch the balls of my feet on the ground.
There are some great touches that other manufacturers could take note of:

There are some great touches that other manufacturers could take note of:
- The pillion pegs are a bolt-on design, leaving a perfect mounting point for a luggage rack
- The very solid feeling rear rack doubles as grab handles and looks like FRP.
- It looks very protected from low-speed drops without any big crash bars. It looks like the bike will drop onto the passenger pegs and fuel outriggers.
looked at one but still too big for UK trails - my 701 is perfect (and i'm 6ft6 220lb) I cant imagine lugging a 200KG wet bike around UK green lanes. Same with the new Yamaha 700.
They seem perfect for long fast gravel (africa, where I've riden big adv bikes and wished I had something around the 200kg mark - not GS sized) but not tech stuff over here.
