Is it really 30 years, since this weapon was unleashed !
This is Mark Forsythes superb original
1989 Exup test from Performance Bikes mag.
Ive looked for years for F 850 GGO, Mitsui Yamahas press demo, 89 Exup, but it seems to have bit the dust in the early 90s.
Anyone recall it ??

And please put your Exup memories up !

Look at the length of that rear mudguard!

I'll bet there aren't many still standard today!

I remember it well and lusted after one at the time, whilst commuting on a ZZR600 back then, and original ZX-10. Still a lovely bit of kit today and occasionally you see a nice unmolested one for sale.

My first bike (OK, a '92 RU ). I feel old now. In fact I am old.

What I can't believe is that 143BHP would feel slow these days. I still actually have the rubber restrictors that I removed to take it from 125-bhp to 143bhp, right here in my desk.

I can remember my Dad coming home on one of these brand new in 1990 and it was mind-blowing, it looked so modern and sporty! I've got a pic somewhere I'll try and dig out later, the dealer had it painted it in Tech 21 colours.

I've got that copy, seem to remember front cover saying 0 to 160 mph in 18 seconds, i had gsxr's .. think it was the Schwantz factor for me , that and the rev counter started at 3k ..
Later on year's later i got cheap exup 1000 Ru, blue / white but was never comfortable on it and always fancied fitting a set of renthals on it.

My Gsxr1100J ,bandit lid , green millets flight jacket, my mate painted it gulf war camouflage colours.. and i fitted the Awol sticker lol.
This Suzuki Gsx1100E i got after being banned for 6 months at age 18,it had a full Vance and Hines exhaust that could be heard 2 miles away lol.. never forget the ride home from that little bike shop in Portsmouth opposite Fratton park smile

Ive tried to trace the early Exup that PBikes Mark Forsythe wrung 172 mph from, but sadly, it looks like it bit the dust in the early 90s.
What happened to your 1100 J ?
Loved my 2 1100G models, but i want a J badly !!

I bought the mag as a 17 year old. Remember it well - "Imagine never having to worry about overtaking anything, anywhere, in any gear"

It was only the wheels ..3 spoke, easier to clean, that were different i'm sure ?
Well i've had probably 30 descent bikes lol, upto 2010 , i guess something had to slow.
This Gsxr11 k was horrid .. but i had more money than sense in my 20's.. £650 full Scorpion/ Approvich pipe ..eek

W123 Mercedes estate out the front.. mx trailer was safe in the front garden back then.

And then V twins and hayabusa's were everywhere, things moved on again smile

Loved that TLR 130mph 3rd gear wheelies all day long smile

Wasn't the mk 3 golf gti the worst gti in history, really wished i gave it a proper test drive, busa kinda made up for it tho, i drag raced it at North weald a few times_think all that's stopped now ?

Loved my old RU EXUP.

had it many years and only sold it when it began to seriously drink oil.

Was considerably quicker than my cousins 92 Blade and I thought, a better road bike but because the EXUP was a bit heavier, gruntier long, stable and planted, it lacked the excitement of the more flighty, peakier Blade.

My friend also had and still has in fact his much modded V&H rep EXUP.

My main memory (apart from its thirst for oil) was the incredible low down torque, much stronger than the 954 'Blade I replaced it with...

Gave it some loving to try and ease its massive oil consumption, didn't cure it!

"Half a litre every 500 miles? They all do that sir."

Seriously, that generation of Yamaha engines were unbelievably thirsty on oil, all of them. Every. Single. One.

Saw so many funked cranks and wrecked top-ends just because the owner didn't believe the salesman who told them to check the oil every time they took it out for a blast.

On the plus side, the valve clearances very seldom needed adjusting...

hehe
