So I’m taking the bike for its MOT tomorrow and, like the clown that I am, I’ve managed to almost drop it but in the process have cracked the front mudguard. I’m almost certain it’ll be an MOT fail but, would I get away putting duct tape over the crack and then either replacing/repairing the mudguard afterwards?

Put some tape over it. They're not allowed to remove it as I understand it. As long as its not flapping about can't see it being a problem. Or drill a couple of small holes either side of the crack and cable tie it back together.

Both of the above.

Gaffa tape, glue and a sticker, cable-ties and bluetac if you like; as long as it isn't flapping around or has a sharp edge it's fine.

Likewise, the old favourite of a broken end of a brake or clutch lever can be mot'd with a blob of body-filler on the end, the tester isn't allowed to remove it to check underneath.

Get it so that it's safe (tape, cable ties, whatever) and it'll pass. The important bit is making it safe.

Worth mentioning the bike MOT now includes testing the number plate light whereas previously it didn’t. If you haven’t got one it’s now a fail.

Is that listed anywhere? I've checked the Gov site and can't see it listed in the changes coming in May 2019

It was an advisory when I had a bike MOT'd last year.

Just an update, a little bit of duct tape means the bike is now MOT’d for another 12 months, thanks all for your input

Taken from the site "Most motorcycles will light the registration plate with a rear position lamp"
Would suggest they don't need a separate lamp

The bottom of the brake light lense is usually clear thus lighting up number plate
