What do I need for a CBT? The place in Bristol say I need boots, gloves and helmet but I’ve no idea what? Any suggestions would be very welcome. I’m planning on commuting 10 miles a day on a PCX125 or equivalent and an A1 license with L plates is all I want so should be ok it’s a CBT.

It's exactly what they've said, boots (not always motorcycle boots, guys on mine used military boots), gloves and helmet.
Where I did mine, they sold you gloves if you didn't have any and they loaned out helmets.

Leather boots with an ankle support ideally, otherwise try for ankle support imho, in case you put a foot down in a rush.

Where I trained they loaned helmets, jackets and gloves if you needed it. I only had walking boots at the time but there were no issues.

If youre intending to commute in all seasons buy water proof textile and waterproof gloves and boots and a flip front helmet.
What you buy is dependent on your budget, buy the best you can afford.
Have a look in Fowlers and J&S who nearly always have a sale going on.
Alternatively go into these shops find out what fits you then try and buy it cheaper via a online retailer or through Ebay.

Similar for me. The gloves were absolutely minging. I used my work boots without any issues.

As for where to buy, I can recommend GetGeared, Helmet City and SportsBikeShop - I've had great service from each.

Whilst obviously sensible to do so, is it a requirement to wear boots and gloves for a CBT?

It would be completely contrary to the message given during the 'classroom' element, and make me question what sort of outfit would permit such behaviour.

Are you sure they aren’t going to be lending you a helmet, jacket and gloves? Most places seem to.

Failing that I recommend getting yourself to good bike shop with a wide range of kit and getting a set of textiles, gloves and a helmet. A flip front is an option but a lot of people prefer non flip front. Either is fine.

I was on a tight budget when I started riding so I got my jacket, trousers and gloves from eBay. I would always buy a new helmet from a physical shop where they know how to fit you properly.

I am certainly a believer in wearing all the kit for safety.

Enjoy your CBT! Riding is great.

i'd check your facts OP. i've never heard of a place offering a CBT course that didn't loan you a helmet. some might/might not give you gloves.

if you just want to do your CBT they should be loaning you a helmet. the boots and gloves aren't needed for the course. wear a jack/coat thats a little warm but more importantly comfy. if you have regular boots then that would be a good thing to wear, esp over something like running trainers.

Once you've done your CBT you can decide yourself what kind of gloves jacket and boots you want.

Thanks for the info, it seems some places locally offer all the kit, others don’t.

you don't NEED any of the kit other than a helmet to do CBT, pretty much all these places will give you a helment, if they don't i'd seriously quesiton what kind of a CBT school they are.

when i did my CBT i had none of these, i just turned up. my CBT was during late autumn/early winter. it was cold and wet.
- footwear- i wore trainers that didnt have holes in them. i did fine
- trousers- i wore jogging bottoms under jeans, i did fine
- hands-- i had no gloves. my fingers got cold and numb a couple of times you could wear any gloves if you don't have biker gloves
jacket- its only really for padding. i wore a hoodie under a jacket and did fine. you will too in this weather.

in this weather you can make do. the only need to wear biker boots, gloves and jacket is for padded protection. its seriously unlikely you'll go off the bike in your training. if you know how to ride a bicycle you'll be fine.

You’re going to need the equipment anyway once you’ve completed, so you may as well get sorted now.

I’d buy a helmet brand new from a shop as they are slightly different shapes and you need one that fits correctly.

Gloves are inexpensive new so I’d get them at the same time as well.

Boots..you might get a bargain on eBay but I wouldn’t want second hand boots.

Jacket and trousers...definitely bargains to be had on eBay.

Also, if you plan on doing A1 you won’t need L plates. They are only for people riding on a CBT. You’re aware there’s a difference?

I wore timberland boots.

I bought my own gloves as the CBT company ones stank, and it was february, so wanted something warm.

I had my own helmet from track days/type 7.

I borrowed a stinky jacket.

I wore actual diesel jeans.
