S1000RR 2010 - 11 Models / Any Issues ?
Discussion
As soon as I say this people will come out of the woodwork saying theirs is bullet proof but IMO you are slightly more likely to have major engine and gearbox issues on these than the Japanese competition (except maybe the 08 on 'blade).
There is some question over the camshafts and left hand switchgear used to fail for fun - likely to have been replaced by now. I've also heard of the cush drives going soggy at relatively low miles.
Personally I'd not sleep well owning one out of warranty just because you do hear about big expensive failures slightly more commonly than the normal (every manufacturer has problems).
I'll put it this way, if you trawl the forums you'll be hard pressed to find someone saying their GSXR engine or gearbox failed while you won't have to look hard to find the opposite on the S1000RR.

The very early models had a lighter flywheel, which was prone to failure. This was fixed by about March 2010 and those models had a heavier one.
Gearboxes were apparently made of cheese, but that depends on how hard it’s been used. A road one is unlikely to have have been abused enough for it to fail any sooner than most other manufacturers / models. A lot had a new detent spring added by the owners, which prevented a lot of the issues.
Some early bikes had engine issues and let go early in their lives, it this was either fixed, or not an issue for the majority of the bikes. If it’s not gone pop now, then it won’t as result of this.
The bikes are incredible and still stand up well against the competition still IMO and have only just been replaced, barring a few minor cosmetic tweaks over the past decade.

My mate has one, the only issue was at its last service they noticed an issue with the radiator which they replaced and BMW picked up the cost of the radiator as it should not have failed apparently.
He loves it, tours in Europe on it every year.
They seem no better or worse than any of the other main manufacturers.
Test ride one, if you like it, buy it, I would not lose sleep over it breaking.

What happened and which year model Walter ?
Mine was a 2010, I bought it in 2013 and it happened a couple of months after, had about 6k miles on the clock IIRC.I think it was something to do with the cam followers but don’t hold me to that it was a while ago now and I’ve forgotten!, all I know is I was riding on the M25 in 6th at 70 keeping up with traffic not hammering it or anything and it started sounding really rattly and something seriously wrong, pulled over straight away and turned it off and called BMW assistance, it got recovered and they replaced the entire engine.
Despite this it was a great bike and I’d not say they’re unreliable on the whole.
Friend of mine has a 2015 that he bought a few years back with about 7k miles on it. He's put about 5k on it since and in that time hes had the ignition barrel fail and, scarily, the output shaft completely let go (it snapped off completely where it meets the front sprocket) which required the engine to be pretty much stripped apart to replace. Would have been a very expensive fix had he not done the work himself. I think he's had or two other issues too. It's put me off getting a BMW bike (and I'm a big bmw fan, owning an M140i) and I'll stick with my R1 which has been faultless over 4 years/12k miles.

Scary!! I've not heard of this before !!Is the 14 model essentially the same as a 12 / 13 ?
