Heading out to the IOM next week and only really there for the Saturday practice so just wanted to know what time the practice actually kicks off on the day as we are thinking of driving out to Port Erin and taking in some scenery

There is a sort of car track day on the friday which we'll be there for too

normally it is roads close at 5 and practice at 6, mountain may close earlier, 430. But you will get best part of day on Island unhindered!

For first Saturday practice, it is all the newcomers being escorted about etc, quite interesting, but one of the only times I watch from the grandstand area, you can hear all the interviews, see them all off on first laps with bibs on, quite exciting first practice. Otherwise, exit of Kirkmichael is pretty good, first night out, they are all a bit squirrelly out there, and there is burger van and grandstands about!

If you're there just for the Saturday then head down to the Billown Circuit fir the Pre TT Classic races, well worth a watch. As mentioned, the first practice can be a bit pants with the newcomers and lightweights out, big bikes tend to come out Monday.

We had discussed driving from Ramsey to Port Erin on the Saturday and doing the rail journey but given that those races are and and therefore road closures is that a bad idea?

To get to Port Erin from Peel the closures won't affect you (and the road is great). I don't know if the train service is affected though, but it is worth going for a ride.
