Thinking of buying a smallish magnetic tank bag. How well do they hold?

Anyone share experiences?

Over the years I've used a few magnetic tank bags. My advice is don't. All the ones I've used have ended up marking the paint on the tank. I always found that small particles got trapped between the magnet and the paint, however hard I tried to keep things clean, and marked the paint.

Use a tank lock bag, or better still, a Baglux bag.

I'd disagree with Baglux being 'better', they are ugly and the tank covers are horrendous, functional yes, better? for you maybe smile

Or SW MOTECH both work in a similar way using a ring that bolts on round the filler cap. The bag then doesn't sit on the tank so you avoid paint damage and they are really easy to put on and remove. I have SW MOTECH kit but mates have Givi and both work equally well.

I went on a week long tour of Scotland and got a small magnetic tank bag (Oxford 18l one).

it fked the paint up on my tank badly, and I made sure to wipe down/clean the bag thoroughly before attaching it to the tank every time.

If you have an old beater that you don't care about much, go for it, but otherwise do NOT do it.

Get one of those things that mounts to the filler cap rim instead and isn't touching the tank.

Come on! No tank bag "looks good". They're all ugly but functional.

The advantage of the Baglux tank cover is that the tank paintwork is protected all the time but, if it doesn't work for you, then fair enough!

I'm sad but not surprised to read that. frown I hope it hasn't tainted your trip.

Have given up with tank bags of all descriptions, I use a rear seat pack or just rucksack for shorter day trips. Resprayed my tank last time after a 2 week touring holiday using a nice "its soft wont mark the tank" tank bag frown

I say that about my £12 top box compared to a mate's £1,200 panniers and top box.

I'm still wrong apparently.

Ive got the Kriega US20 with the tank bag adaptor thing. It works well on the K1300S, no markings after a few trips.

My Givi 6ltr jobby is used daily for commuting, holds fine, strap around the handlebars just in case. My tank is fine, it cost £30. My second one as the first ones zip broke after about 50k miles of use.

Lol at the comments saying it scratches the tank / will blow off / get a £950000 clip in bag that you can hang off.

Just buy it and make sure there is no coins / metal that it has picked up before you bang it on the tank.

No, just amazed how a fabric bag has scratched your tank if it had nothing on it and you wiped it down properly.

I suspect you did not.

It was not fabric, the bottom of it was made of some kind of plasticky rubbery surface.

Suspect away though

This x a million.

My 20 year old 20 quid magnetic tank bag is awesome, fits every bike I’ve owned, doesn’t harm the paint, stays on at top speed, doesn’t get in the way for knee scraping but clearly isn’t expensive or specialist enough for 2019.

Without trying to be controversial, I have been using various different Oxford magnetic tank bags for years and have never once scratched a tank.
I put it on and off the tank carefully, I fold the 'wings' shut after I take it off, I take care where I put it down; simple common sense really!

The last time this topic came up someone was going off on one because he didn't notice he had picked up a pair of pliers when he laid the tankbag on a workbench and, lo and behold, his tank ended up scratched!

I’ve tried various ‘tank ring’ systems and found the Hepco & Becker LockIt system by far the best thumbup

I’ve used both of these and found them good, with a slight preference for the SW Motech tank ring. However, the Hepco & Becker LockIt tank ring is better still (even simpler to use, yet a lot more secure).

Also, Hepco & Becker’s Royster tankbag is completely waterproof without the need for an extra cover.

That was me, and it wasn't funny at all, it's ok being perfect and never doing any damage but sometimes you just forget, removing a magnetic tank bag then refitting it several times a day whilst trying to find somewhere to put it because you also have a tailpack on or a tiny rear seat whilst you fuel in case you pick some random st up on one of the 6 or so magnets is a major fking pain in the arse, a tank lock bag takes almost all the hassle away and you can just plonk it on top of the fuel pump whilst you fill up as no part of it touches the bike, so laugh all you want you knob.
