A colleague at work is buying his son a FZR 400 as a project bike, basically to learn how to take things apart and put them back together again. Other than joining FZR forums, what would be the best place to locate seal, bearings etc wemoto.com?

Sadly we don't have a great source of breakers, local shops we can go to in Dubai (less said about the local dealer the better).

Sounds like a great project.

Wemoto have lots of parts, as do plenty of other retailers. Also look at Fowlers for parts diagrams..

Try to check the measurements and fitment as much as possible, before ordering non OE parts. Wemoto are pretty good, but I've had to return quite a few items, same with the others.

Have fun!

I remember as a young lad a mate was racing an RGV.

The bike to have the year before but when he raced the FZR400 was coming on strong, they revved to the skies but bottom ends were very fragile.

I've never used them, but might David Silver Spares be helpful? (I see their adverts in the VJMC magazine every issue).

Yes, I remember wanting nearly all the grey import 250's and 400's back then.

My fave was the NSR250 with the card reader ignition key! Silly money though.

I think most did a 250 4 stroke screamer? Kawasaki certainly did, not sure about Honda though.

My first trackday as a young guy was on an FZR400 RRSP, at Cadwell. A great little bike. With ever more draconian enforcement of speed, a fun Sunday ride bike too.

I'd certainly look at the 400 owners forum and the FZR 400 Owners Club on Facebook. I've found the facebook groups really helpful with a bigger Yamaha..

They did all do 250s too. You could get a ZXR250, FZR, CBR, GSXR and even a ZZR250! Plus all the 250 two-strokes of course.

It was a great era to be a youth getting into sports bikes as most of the crop of superbikes were available as grey imports in smaller sizes.

My first proper bike was an RVF400 when I was 18 in 1998. Was my absolute pride and joy but some scrote nicked it. I couldn’t afford to insure another one so settled on a 1990 FZR400, which wasn’t a patch on the RVF - as you’d expect as the RVF was the next generation really. Sold that for an RS250 Aprilia. Happy days!

ETA my first track day was on the FZR at Snetterton in about 2000. Scary that’s 20 years ago now!

Never knew too much about the 250 4 strokes as you can tell!

Was more of a stroker fan to be honest

You say, "seals and bearings".. Most will have serial/part nos. on that can be seen when removed from the bike. If not, most are sold on internal diameter, external diameter etc., so anyone with a Vernier (or similar) gauge can measure and order equivalents. Usually a quick Google will find a supplier and you won't need to use a bike parts dealer which may, or may not, be easier.

When my mates and I were into 400's back in the nineties, Elliots MC's in Cricklade was the go to for grey bikes locally; not sure if Alistair is still into them but worth a go
