provisional bike licence

I may be out of date with the regs but think...
You need a CBT before doing anything. Your grandfather rights would then allow you to ride a 50cc machine with no l-plate or a 125cc with l-plate. You would need to retake the cbt every 2 years.
Once you have your CBT you can then do your full bike licence.

This is a confusing area.
My wife passed her car test in 1988 and did a CBT in 2000 to ride a 125 on L plates.
She did not pursue her biking career, so sold the 125 in 2002; Last year she got a 50cc scooter to buzz about on when camping etc, and was told she could ride that on her car licence as a provisional licence for a moped. It was the local police that told her that having "inspected" her licence. Again, she did do a CBT, but if it lasted 2 years, it lapsed years ago.
To further confuse, she has only ridden on the Isle of Man, where they don't allow L plates. So again, on advice of local plod, she was told to remove them and carry on!
She is insured on it as a provisional licence.
I think as it is 50cc, she is ok at her age etc to ride with no cbt, and only needs it with a 125 for L plates. But think she needs to use L plates on the 50cc. But it is thoroughly confusing, I find!

When I applied for my first licence I asked for provisional bike and car. Didn't need the bike part for a good many years mind.
I was under the impression that even if you had a full driving licence (and so could drive small capacity mopeds etc), if you wanted to do proper CBT, bike test etc, you'd need a provisional bike licence.
That's backed up here: https://www.gov.uk/ride-motorcycle-moped Clearly if you're only intending to ride a small engine moped, which is likely already covered on your car licence as category p or q, then no need to get a provisional.

I did my CBT and all subsequent tests by handing over my driving licence to whoever wanted to see it, never applied for anything provisionaljjones said:

Seems you are correct so they should rename it "might not be compulsory basic training"!https://www.gov.uk/motorcycle-cbt/car-driving-lice...
When I did it in 2007, it was the opposite of what some people have described. You must have the provisional motorcycle entitlement on your licence before you did the CBT. They would check peoples photocards before you did it too, and if you didn't have it, they would have to send you away.
Check your photocard has the right required entitlement. If not you'll likely need to sort that first with the DVLA before you do a cbt.
