BMW are having problems supplying the RR apparently. Delivery dates appear to be slipping. My friend who I am supposed to be going to Spain with in September has seen his date slip from May to June to July then August with no guarantee he is going to get it then. He has, or is going to cancel order and get something else. Is this a one off or is it being replicated elsewhere.

Ouch, must be frustrating.

This has been known about for ages. BMW released a very small amount of bikes for delivery in June / July, dealers got around 3 bikes maximum as their allocation for 2019.

Most then sold way too many hoping that production would step up. It hasn’t. Delivery dates have therefore slipped a lot.

Even race teams are struggling to get hold of the new bikes.

Going to get something else? Has he read the reviews? Does he want any bike so long as it's delivered in a week or two? Just wait, it'll soon turn up, young 'uns, no patience. He could try a different dealer, North Oxford had an M Sport for July delivery, ring around.

I ordered a red one, it'll be here in September or thereabouts.

Little naughty this one. The bike was on pre order prior to release so I think he has been more then patient. He part exchanged his other BMW 1000RR at the time so he has had no bike this year. He is actually 66 years of age. He has not ordered nor does he want a bog standard red one. He has read the reviews thats why he has a test ride on a Panigale V4 S this week, that may well be acceptable as a substitute but he really wants the new RR. We have three weeks in Spain at beginning of September and he doesn't really want to walk all the way. ....... ' it will be here in September or thereabouts' .... hope so I really do.

I have been dicked around like this before and it is a royal pain in the ass (I eventually got the bike on a Thursday and we left on the Sunday (but there was no guarantee it would arrive)).

Youtube MCN review is just out with the v4s and the s1000rr might be worth him having a watch.

Just sold my old RR, and I don't think I'll be going back for another new one. The Motorrad sales department reminded me of this lot

but with less charm.

Surely chopping his old bike in long before the new one was due to arrive was a bit of a mistake?

I can’t really speak for the new S1000RR, I’ve not ridden one yet but got a test ride booked, I’ve got a Panigale V4 and yes it is amazing but it is flawed too, my main complaints on it are the clutch and the amount of heat it kicks out.
It’s not too bad when you’re out on open roads, even in summer but take it anywhere near a town where you’re at a constant slow speed and filtering and it’s awful.

In hind sight that is a very pertinent comment. However that has been his MO every 12 to 18 months it has never gone wrong before, this would have been his 4th 1000rr I think (everytime they have brought a new model out). The upside is as you would imagine it has given the rest of us the unmissable opportunity to take the 9iss unmercifully.

Bar the initial launch, the subsequent releases were just iterations around a base model with minor superficial changes. I got one of the first original bikes back in 2009 / 10 and it was not as straightforward as people remember. I was promised a bike by Nov 2009, but chose to defer it to March. Throughout Jan and Feb I was fielding constant calls apologising that the bike wouldn’t be ready until June at the earliest. As it turned out the panic at their wasn’t necessary and the bike turned up in March.

The bike had a significant number of recalls and glitches in the first 6 months I owned it and there was an upgrade to the flywheel or something like that for all future builds as the original one wasn’t up to the job and kept failing. As did some bolts or conrods or something that weren’t torqued right and resulted in quite a few engines going boom. I think BMW are nervous about a similar set of problems.

I raise my hat to him. I’ve done two week bikey trips to Europe in my 30’s and 40’s on less focussed sportsbikes from the noughties.

3 weeks in your mid 60’s on a 210hp race bike. Not just the physical contortions but the mind melt when doing 400 mile days at 10,000 rpm ++ in the upper 3 gears in today’s traffic?! The heat, focus, enjoyment sweet spot of these things!! yikes

Take it to Euro trackday and get it out of your system in a few days shirley!?

We are a small pack of gentlemen riders of a certain age, I am the youngest at 62. All on sports bikes of various makes. We like to think we are competent and fast though we will readily accept perhaps not the fastest. After long hours in the saddle we don't really suffer it is perhaps about just letting your body get used to the postionning and such. Any one who has done certain areas of the Pyrennees, Picos, and central Spain know it is like a euro track day. Thanks for the good wishes.

Apparently there are potential gearbox problems, that is why production of the S1000RR has been stopped and there is a recall.
Affected are 340 bikes, of which 113 were earmarked for Germany.
Most of the 340 bikes haven't been sold yet.

One of the three identical machines that are used to make gearboxes had an unnoticed defect which could lead to incorrectly drilled "oil holes" in the gearbox (I translate from German, do not know English term for Ölbohrung).

Recall involves engine replacement.

Also, BMW was surprised by unusually large number of orders, especially of the top M-model.
BMW expects some deliveries not to happen until end of 2019.

I'd keep the order in place, hire a bike for the trip and see if the dealer will show sympathy and chuck in some extras if your friend shows proof of his trip and bike hire (if required by then). They may even lend him something??

He may have been happy with the original delivery date and secured a value of 'x' on his old bike by trading in immediately.

I'd twist your mates arm and get him to try an RSV4 as a short term option, seems to be getting favourable reviews even in the face of the BMW.

Annoying to be in that position though.

It looks like he has kept the order but put it back to the spring. It appears at this stage a some sort of deal has been done with dealer for a bike for our euro trip. So it appears that all's well that ends well. The rest of us just hope it's a GS 650
