Tuono test ride
Discussion
After all of 300 miles last year and just having sold the Street Triple I fancied scratching another itch on a new bike.
Fast forward to today and I took a Factory 1100 out for a test ride. I was staggered how easy it was to ride, so much power everywhere but interestingly much more stable that the Street? The active Ohlins was sublime, at the speeds I was going it was barely working anyway, but it dealt with rough bumpy roads easily. Blipper and shifter were good, brakes...the M50's are great. They felt slightly less aggressive on this than the RS, maybe the master cylinder ratio. Easily the most impressive thing was the way it covered ground, the bike just gets on with it. I left the riding mode in 'Sport', AWC in 2 and ABS in 2. With those settings it was benign, no wheelies, but it would have picked up in 2nd and 3rd off the throttle no question. The throttle response was a bit naff as it was set up, I prefer it a bit more lively but guessing that's just a setting.
Overall, Brilliant. Totally brilliant bike.

I'm Fancying one of these if I ever get rid of the rsv4.
Ive been told they're a far superior road bike than the Rsv due to the up wide bars and upright seating position. The 1100 engine is supposed to be a bit more torquey too.
How did you find the comfort/range?

It’s very comfortable, wide bays and for me not too much weight on the wrists. It’s slightly sportier than the Street, but nothing like an RSV. Looked at the new one today, a total weapon but imho a track refugee. Range on the Tuono is poor, 100-120 miles or so, but it is what it is. Anything above 3k it just goes, stock can isn’t bad and the induction sounds filthy. The main impression is how it just gets on with going fast, you can leave it in a gear and just roll in and off or short shift. It’s way OTT to pin for long so you just use it in big bursts of shove Ive been told they're a far superior road bike than the Rsv due to the up wide bars and upright seating position. it’s so stable though, never ridden a bike as composed. What it’d do to a set of Supercorsas I can’t imagine, 1800 miles?yonex said:

As I was saying on another thread where you said I was talking rubbish the street is a really unstable feeling bike. I’m not saying it is actually unstable just the feeling it gives puts you on edge. The aprilia is a very sorted bike but I reckon anything you ride after a 765 RS would feel planted.

I liked the feel of the RS, but it’s a fair point you’re making. I never felt it was unstable but it does transmit a lot more of the bumps. The Tuono and the S1000 I rode were both different class, I figured mainly due to the active dampers. I thought it’d be intimidating, but far from it, although with the aids backed off it’d be far more of a handful. It was in the softest setting, and I felt that. The front dived too much and the throttle response was lazy. I only had 40 mins so wasn’t looking to faff about. The key is it fitted me and felt ok. I don’t like the aesthetics much but it’s a hoot to ride. The aprilia is a very sorted bike but I reckon anything you ride after a 765 RS would feel planted.

I got a19 in March and currently have 400 miles on it. Couple of warranty bits at the beginning but overall brilliant and it's my second tuono now
Fuel range is typically 105-110 before light comes on and you'll see another 20 or so on reserve
Mine has the race map and akrapovic exhaust. Definitely feels stronger in the mid and less snatchy with that setup
For road ABS2 is fine for me TC 3-4
You said about it lifting in 2nd when 3rd...100% yes. I ride with WC off and it'll flip if you pin it in 2nd sitting upright and 2nd to 3rd or 3rd over a crest when wide open will see it comfortably lift
I don't have many gripes with mine. The front rotas are too thin from factory and warp if you are keen on the brakes alot. You won't get that with brembo oro or any decent aftermarket
A double bubble makes a big difference, I used powerbronze. The lights are rubbish - change the bulbs to led direct swap and makes a night and day change (see what I did there) and if you ride alot use the USB behind the dash... Its brilliant

I knew someone had a '19 here but didn't know the name. Thanks.
I felt that the response was a bit snatchy but put it down to maybe the chain being a bit slack or the mode it was in, beyond 3K it was fine but nowhere near as smooth as an inline 4 or the RS low down. You could see feel the traction cutting in when hard on the gas, so I am not surprised with that amount of power. How are you finding the brakes, is there a fair bit of travel at the lever, the RCS master cylinder on the RS was brilliant and you could set it up just how you liked? The only other thing was understanding how soft it was setup, the front definitely could have been firmer. Have to speak to the dealer tomorrow, not sure whether to go with a '19 or an earlier one and save some money whilst losing a bit of the modern features?

Track setup is fine for keen road riding or track but tbh I tend to leave in Sport suspension.
The master is adjustable on the lever. I just adjusted it to make a bit sharper as I found it came in too much as standard. Same with the clutch which I prefer more freeplay, the brake and gear shifter which I adjust the allen keys and drop lower (I dont like much throw when banging up the gears)
If you have TC on 6-8 it'll just flash all the time. As said 3-4 will let you ride as fast as you want but cover you if it steps out
My 19 is a fair bit more refined vs my 16 but that was a great bike. Needed to remove the trash brake for a RCS 19 https://youtu.be/RYuQ16yiuAo it also runs the older calipers although tbh good pads or normal road riding wont have you worrying much
There are lots of finer changes. The TC on the 19 is slighter better and more predictable. ABS1 turns rear ABS off on the 19 but not the 16, the QS is smoother + it has a blipper. It revs 500rpm higher which means bugger all tbh except a few more mph top speed. It has cruise control which for me is brilliant.
Horses for courses. I only changed my 16 as it had near 17k of hard mileage and was out of warranty. It needed money spent and worked out better to px and buy a new one rather than spend a grand on tidying my 16 up

The new factory is a brilliant brilliant bike, but don’t discount the RR
It’s bascially the same bike, electronics, power brakes QS and blipper etc but without the fancy suspension, the Sachs stuff is v good as well.
I bought an RR after test riding a Factory on that same premise, the Factory was the first bike I ever rode that made me laugh while riding it. Just an awesome bike. It’s bascially the same bike, electronics, power brakes QS and blipper etc but without the fancy suspension, the Sachs stuff is v good as well.
I hated the RR, it felt completely different to the Factory and I got rid of it less than a couple of months into ownership.
Interestingly I now have an RS and I think it's a great bike, not quite Factory good but wouldn't swap to an RR for it. I don't find it particularly unstable, but you do have to trust the front - I wonder if that's just down to the weight, it's a fair bit lighter than the Tuono and suspect you have to ride it more like a 600 to get the most out of it? Or maybe even my weight, I'm only 66kg..
I went back to the dealer earlier, think I am going to go for it (cue thunder, lightening, and monsoon for the next 90 days
). If it happens the plan now is to ride it to Milan and use it to visit all the places I keep looking at, whilst I have the job out there. An hour from Como and some awesome roads.
