Hi all,

I've just come back from a ride to find a nail right in the centre of my rear supercorsa!! It's less than 200 miles old and the bike gets through enough tyres as it is so I'm keen not to junk it if its safe to repair? The bike is a 2015 R1 if that makes any difference.

Is it safe to repair a high speed rated tyre and if so is there a particular type of repair that I need to use?

Many thanks

Dave

If bloke at tyre place is up for repairing it then go for it. I’ve done trackdays and Euro bike trips (i.e. big sustained speeds) on plugged tyres.

I'd probably look to do it myself if possible and safe , I can certainly remove and refit the tyre myself so I may as well

Indeed we are. I'd rather like to put it off as long as possible though!

I’d repair, but properly - not a diy plug unless you have the correct tools..

I have repaired around 10 punctures using the cheap as chips rubber string types that are around a tenner on flea bay. Never had any issues (including fireblade, s1000rr). But the choice is yours.

There is a British Standard for motorcycle tyre repairs.

IIRC, and if it hasn't changed recently, it says
no repairs in the sidewalls
only repair half the width, in the middle of the tread
max 1 repair (2 repairs if low speed rating)
don't repair Z-rated tyres, except temporarily (although I think some manufacturers may say that it's OK)

I have no idea how closely the standard is followed.

Go for a proper repair from a garage,

If you want to fix it yourself/have the ability to do so in the future when out riding then have a look at Dyna plug,

Thanks for the advice all, I whipped the wheel round to my friendly local bike shop and he plugged it for me and refitted it to the rim. He only asked for a fiver too (I gave ten, five seemed an insult, still a bargain) smile
