My new (to me) Triumph has a 190 50 17 rear tyre as standard fitment. It doesn't really want to lean or drop into corners as nicely as my old bike which had a much narrower 160 rear tyre.

Is it a good idea to fit a 180 55 17 instead? The Haynes manual suggests that the Daytona/Sprint have the same width of wheels but the former has 190s and the latter has 180s. Any thoughts?

A 190/55 or 180/55 will be fine, I changed the rear on my Z1000 from a 190/50 to 190/55 and it made a big difference to turn in and the bike being able to hold a line.

Yep 180 will work fine, take it easy at first as you may get ground clearance issues.

I would try a 190/55 first.

Why would ground clearance be an issue? A 180/55 tyre has a taller sidewall than a 190/50.

No idea...when I ran a 180 on the back of my TL1000, I had ground clearance issues, I guess it has something to do with the bike leaning over further.

It's that '50' bit that's doing it

As said get yourself upto a 55 and 180 or 190

That on its own will make the difference you're looking for. I had the same when I bought an mv agusta dragster rr. Came with a 200/50 I switched to a 200/55 and thought it was the best thing since sliced bread

Alot would go down to a 190/55 too

I had a 190/55 Michelin pilot power 3 fitted but it seemed to be much wider than any previous 190/55 I'd run and really didn't want to tip into corners.

I had a 180/60 fitted this morning and the steering feels much sharper, a lot of this is due to the bike running much fresher rubber vs knackered but the narrower rear does seem to help.

There is less than 10mm of clearance clarence between the O/D of the tyre and the swing arm though yikes

Cheers all. It may be down to me but I could really get my CBR scraping its footpegs, this sort of cornering style doesn't suit the Daytona, which feels very unhappy at any kind of lean. I will swap the tyres (Bridgestone sports tourings) for something a bit sportier, like Metzeler Sportecs which were superb on my old bike.

Apparently newer Triumphs naffed off 190 50 17s on later model Daytonas and Speed Trips and dropped back a size to 180 55 17s so I think I'll follow suit.

Sometimes when I was being a tight arse I'd run (before I switched to slicks) some of my kicked out track tyres on my road bike. Typically conti race attack 180 or 190 60

Jesus they were 'keen' to drop in for road riding

I think we have found the problem hehe

Triumph put Bridgestones on the late 955 Daytonas and the tyres really were ste, I mean more ste than a Chunder27 post ffs!!
