Has anybody actually used one that works? Even if it's only effective for a short period.

I’ve never had an issue with the NikWax spray? Seems pretty effective. Granted I don’t do riding for hours in downpours, but the few times I’ve been caught out the textiles I’ve treated with it have kept me dry.
If you’re riding in your textiles everyday I’d say it’ll need retreating every few weeks, but it’s easy to do and not expensive. I just hang mine in the shower cubicle and give them a spray... leave over night, job jobbed.

I've used the Nikwax tech wash and re proof combo. Chuck a capful in with your gear in the washing machine, first wash cleans it, second rinse 're proofs'

I've not had any complaints, done wonders for my textiles after I hadn't washed them in about 20,000 miles, I didn't realise black could look so dirty, until I washed them and they came out looking new.

Used Nikwax for years on non motorcycling outdoor kit. A few years back tried it on my kevlar jeans and it worked well enough to make them showerproof, at least 30 mins in the rain without soaking through.

Nikwax again. Put my suit on a hanger on the washing line and spray thoroughly and leave to dry.

I keep seeing articles about the wonders of WD40 , very effective for waterproofing boots and clothing its claimed.

And cleaning toilet bowls, apparently.

Silicon spray works wonders and is cheap as chips.
