KTM 450 Stolen?
Discussion
Hi, my dad bought a KTM 450 EXC 2010 (so we thought) yesterday. The lad he bought from was a friend of a friend. He wrote up a receipt for a 2010 model but after driving away I managed to check the VIN number and now realise it's a 2008. To cut a long story short there is other discrepancies in the model aswell (they've changed the plastics) and my dad is trying to get his money back. Now the lad is avoiding his calls and even his friends calls. He could likely live with the wrong year etc but his big concern is, is it stolen? He feels so stupid about what he's done and I think he's worried that if he checks with the police he will lose the bike and the money if his suspicions are correct. Does anyone have any advice on this situation? BTW it's not road registered. Thanks in advance.
Not really sure what to advise here, but the EXC range are road legal, I had a 450EXC and this had a V5, I guess it would be possible to buy one without being road registered and used purely off road.
Regardless of getting hold of the seller and disputing the cost vs. model year I'd want to know if it was stolen or not, I doubt the seller a) would tell you if it was b) know if he'd bought it from someone else.
I'd contact the police to confirm, hopefully it will come back clean and you can dispute the cost etc with the seller, if it is stolen unfortunately you're going to have to hand over the bike to the police (remember there's someone out there without their bike) and let the police deal with the seller and in turn advise how to get your money back.

Yeah thanks for the reply. That was first thing my dad was going to do is road register it so he can do a bit of green laning in between hare and hound events etc. Difficult situation because you are obviously right if it is stolen someone is without a bike! It's eating him up today he doesn't know what to do as the lad is completely ignoring him. He's bought 100's of motorbikes over the years without any issues but this one just doesn't seem right.
