Posted in Ultima and biker Banter section.

Whilst out on a little jolly yesterday I came across a nice looking R1 and a stretch of deserted dual carriage way (honest!). The bike pulled up behind me instantly letting me know he wanted to play, I did the decent thing and pulled over to let him past...... Then floored it. The bike looked like it had been tricked up, under seat 4-pipe system, very nice!

At first we had a couple of bends and one or two round abouts, ideally suited to the Ultima it was obvious their was no contest the massive tyres just stuck like glue. As we got on to the straights my gut feelin was the Ultima would dominate the bike here too.

The bloke riding the bike was very thoughtful, he waited until the road was clear before really gunning it, I assume just to give me a fair chance (and a honest ass whipping!!). Up through the gears, second, third and fourth I could close the gap. I was only using probably 80% throttle. At this point we came into a bit of traffic so I sat back and relaxed, time to digest what just happened, my car is faster than an R1, yippee…. I did secretly expect to kick his butt though.

As we came to another clear patch of we went again, same as before up to fourth, no problem. I didn’t want to get too close to him, a biker myself I know I don’t like someone up my chuff at speed so I gave him a good distance. As we hit fifth the gap started open, I wasn’t having that, I nailed it, the gap was back to how I wanted. No problem but I was now at full throttle.

Approaching my rev limit in fifth, the R1 rider was flat against the tank his wrist doubled over, probably expecting to see a little dot in the distance by now, a shadow of my former self, oh no I’m still here. :wavey:

Up into top and off again my foot was now firmly planted to the deck, the revs were slowly climbing. It didn’t matter the bike had pulled away. Aaaaarrrrggg. Only a cars length but he definitely pulled away. Gutted!!
I probably had about 600 rpm to go but the road was fast coming to an end so we both backed off and powered down the warp engines. As we came upto the first lot of traffic I got a big thumbs up of him and then he was gone, I couldn’t get through the traffic quite that easily, DOH!

I honestly believed the Ultima would batter a bike into the ground on a straight, is that just wishful thinking? Am I expecting too much of my car? (or is it just slow). Unlikely but I would love to here the R1s views on the event, I was buzzin and I know travelin at speed on a bike is much more intense.

By the way just in-case anyone is wonderin my car has a 1.3 overhead valve engine coupled to the diff out of a 1100 cortina givin it a top speed of about 75mph. As I had revs left in reserve I reccon I was doin 68mph tops!!!! :jester:

Cheers

I would have thought the bike would have been better on the streights to be honest. Having said that I havnt been in an ultima.
I know how fast my bike goes from 80ish to ludicrus speed (on german autobahns of course)didnt think a car would be anywhere near.

well done

if the guy isnt here have you thought of looking for R1 owners forums. you never know you may be able to have a chat.

I wonder how many cars would "batter" an R1 on a straight? Very few I would imagine and you'd need a lot more than 1300cc to do it!

Sure it wasn't an R(estricted) 125?

"Batter" may be a bit strong i will give you that, but I would have liked to pull away, wishful thinkin maybe. Think I should just be happy I actually kept up with it by the sound of it. I had the extra weight of my missus in the car though (quite a lot, she doesnt read on here i hope.)
Did I say 1.3, or 6.3? I forget! he he he.

Just found the standing 1/4 mile times of a 2004 R1 at SportRider.com (mmm, nice)

www.sportrider.com/features/146_0406_comp_drag/

Anyhow, they got an R1 to do a 9.93s 1/4 mile at 147.4mph.

So that's one F quick ultima. It's also quite a bit quicker than a macca F1 which is thoroughly impressive.

Your Ultima is just slow ... some Chapman 18 degree heads and the right exhaust will give 100 bhp more

my cossie used to keep up with my 97 zx6r... in the end I modded the bike to give me the edge on the wife.

My old Ultima would destroy the Ninja in the same way it was quicker than my modded 916.

the figures don't really say the whole story, until you are strapped in an Ultima with 500+bhp which is then given full welly I could imagine everyone would think a bike was quicker.

however these big bikes are another story... the GSXR100 and ZX12R will take one hell of a lot to beat.

IMO it will mostly be down to the person with the least amount of brains that wins.

so that's me
except I can't ride to save me life

Soooo......anyone out there willing to pit their Ultima against an R1? Anyone got a 2004 R1 come to that (I'd be pleased to be the rider )? Santa Pod, here we come.

i'm no bike knocker, ride one myself and love it..........but, the ultima will do 0-100 in 5.5 seconds and it'll see the naughty side of 200 mph!

i believe it recently broke the F1's 0-100-0 time too.

bloody cars.

Figures for the CBR1000RR are as follows:

Performance
1/4-mile: 10.10 sec. @ 146.92 mph
0-60 mph: 2.82 sec.
0-100 mph: 5.14 sec.
0-150 mph: 10.44 sec.
Top Speed: 178.15mph.
70-0 braking: 51.73m.
Source MCN website. Conditions dry.

If the Ultima in 680bhp guise can pull over 200mph than I would believe that the Blade will have the edge, JUST!!! (in good conditions) up to around 130mph where the cd value of the car would start giving it the advantage and then come past through and up to VMAX. Given the contact patch of the Ultima's tyre, I concede that it would carry more corner speed through any corner and would have the advantage in any case.

Can't remember seeing an Ultima wheelie though!

While I think of it, can't see how I could wear down me knee sliders either.

Only been in bluesatins Ult a few times so no expert but-

Ults are so depentant on spec & even in bluesatins when i went in it 1st time round, I really didnt think it was mental fast, sure it was quick no doubt, but not in superbike catagory, only normal properly quick road car type level
(he later found out it was hardly firing on one cyl)

He had fettled with it over the winter for more power & in my subsequent blasts & it felt a lot lot lot quicker, propper 'feck me this is quick' & get a bit lightheaded on acceleration type quick & the brakes- flipping eck your eyes almost pop out!

So tough to say if quicker than superbike, but did feel in the fast bike area, tho his gearing is restricted so bike would pip it right at the top end. Don't think his in the 5.5secs to 100 level tho.

What spec is your Ult? as the G-man engine spec is really somthing a bit special, & not like the majortiy of 'em.

Gotta ask too- was it def an R1 not R6

Guess one of the few who can answer this is Stig- whos had his Ult & an R1 at the same time.

If ya wanna battle tho bennyboy, you will have to join the q with phatgixxer & grovel to craig to let bikes to vmax, & borrow fergus' bike too as even with your whippet built- your 600 wont quite cut it! however think hes understandably worried about the safety aspect tho having an unblemished vamx record to date. the inevitable TVR blowups & rear screens popping out excluded!
