Evening all,

Recently passed my Mod1/Mod 2 and just bought my first bike.

I’ve been offered an extended warranty and whilst it seems like a good deal, I’m not sure whether to go for it.

My question really is “what makes an extended warranty worth having?” Is there obvious elements of a policy that I should be looking at?

No. Just no. Bikes are so (relatively) cheap to maintain that it’s hardly worth (and I’m a Ducati owner)

It all depends for me on what bike it is, age, mileage, price paid and how long you intend to keep it.

As above really, for an example my bike has LED headlights, if the unit fails its £900 for a new one, it's also got lot of fancy electronics with expensive ecu's which will all be in excess of a grand to replace I'm sure, an extended warranty makes sense for me, but if it's a relatively simple bike you have bought then it might not make sense to buy one.

Also consider how good your relationship with the dealer is. Often the success/failure of a warranty claim is how well its presented by the dealer.

If it's a KTM, yes.

Anything else, maybe not.

Hmmmm, wait until your cases warp and you've suddenly got a 3.5k bill on your hands, speaking from experience on both a Multi 1200 and Panigale 1199.

There’s a number of bikes I wouldn’t even contemplate owning without an extended warranty...

Really depends on the bike though.

What Bike and for how much?

Is it a manufacturer warranty ?

Read the policy to see what is and isn't covered.

Before the 3 yr warranty ran out on my bike I claimed for: new swing arm for corrosion, new exhaust valve thingy, New quick shift. All of these were NOT covered under the manufacturer extended warranty.... so I didn't bother with it.

If you're getting it serviced by a main dealer wink

There was a post on here many moons ago that helped me make the decision not to bother with the extended warranty on my bike; there was even a pretty graph and everything laugh
It indicated that the period that an extended warranty typically covers you for is actually the least likely period of ownership during which something is likely to go wrong; any manufacturing faults are most likely to make themselves known during the original factory warranty period (ie: 2 years), and then age-related faults are more likely to occur after the extended warranty period expires (5th year onwards). Certainly seems to have rung true for me so far, although I suspect not a hard and fast rule by any means!

It’s a used Ducati Monster 821 and (based on some of the comments here) it sounds like it wouldn’t be a bad idea...

It’s a Superbike Factory 15 month warranty (£200). Seems pretty good but only covers items up to £500. It does have roadside assistance thrown in.

I’m not making any comment on Superbike Factory but to me that warranty would need a fair bit of further investigation before I signed up!

Just some of my concerns...

£500 is not an awful lot, and of the things that you’re likely to need to claim on a warranty for, £500 probably won’t even scratch the surface when you factor labour in. Clutch, engine, radiator, suspension etc.

Would Superbike Factory fix it in-house as part of this warranty? I wouldn’t trust a motorbike warehouse like them to have the facilities, expertise or ability to work on a Ducati. No slight on them (they obviously do what they do very successfully, although from what I’ve seen online they don’t look like my sort of place) but it’s not what they do. For warranty work I’d preferably be wanting a good Ducati specialist or at a push a Ducati main dealer.

I wouldn't bother, they seem pretty bloody reliable from what I could find when I did my research. The bigger models are a different kettle of fish.

To be fair, the deal itself doesn’t seem too bad and it can be used at any garage (including Ducati) but being new to this I haven’t really got a clue what the worst that could happen is. The comment about cases costing £3.5k were slightly worrying! I’m going to put it into Ducati as soon as I have it to preempt and servicing issues etc.

As an aside, I found the service to be pretty good there. I would use them again (providing there’s no issues with this bike of course!).

I got an extra years warranty on my Panigale V4, kind of glad I did as there are a couple of issues I need to get sorted when it's in for its next service.

Ducati offer a red care warranty which covers everything and for an SBK was around £400.

3rd party stuff probably won't cover everything, so worth checking the T&C's.

It was £400 each year for the V4 iirc.
