High mileage sports bike. Would you?
Discussion
Accidentally won an auction the other day for a 2002 CBR900RR 954. Bought unseen going on the pics and description. I bid an amount that seemed a bit low to me, expecting to be outbid as the time ticked down. Only that didn't happen and i won!
It's done 52k miles!!!
Highest mileage bike i've had was my VFR800 that i sold on about 45k miles. That was still running well, not using any oil, but the suspension was a bit tired.
I've had plenty of bikes in the 30-40k mile range, but i've tended to sell them before they hit 40k to try to get half-decent money for them.
I'll update with pics once i get it in a week or two.
Seems some youtubers have CBR600s with 200k+ miles on them, but judging by the videos they spend 99% of their time at 55mph in a straight line.
What's your experience of bikes that are north of 50k miles?

100k that's impressive
Funny that i asked the same thing a few years ago, culminating in me breaking my leg. Hope history doesn't repeat itself!!

My 98 R1 is now on 54k and at least half of them have been on the track.
Unlikely to have top end problems (until the day it drops a valve) more likely to have gearbox and worn out cycle parts.
I had a high mileage 929 for a bit (trying to keep mileage down on the R1) and apart from a stuck HIVX valve and corresponding burnt out servo motor the only other issue was comically stretched brake caliper mounting bolts.

Yep, I would and I have. My 600 did 76,000 odd without issue, my Daytona has done about 42,000, although it has had a later engine fitted. Most higher capacity bikes are fairly unstressed, few go the distance without getting wrapped around something if they're being thrashed. I reckon with regular servicing and probably more importantly regular checks on things like the valve clearances, there is no reason why any bike wouldn't see 100,000miles.
The reason bikes rarely achieve high miles is that most only get ridden a few times a year, so more than 2,000-3,000 miles pa is high.

Lad I ride on the road with has 80k on his 99 R1.Unlikely to have top end problems (until the day it drops a valve) more likely to have gearbox and worn out cycle parts.

Not especially cheap, but all the service stamps, nothing to worry about imo.
My CBR929 was £1500, I used it for 6 months and sold it for the same. Looks nice enough, you could track it for a few years and still get your money back.
It's cheap enough direct off a dealer as no matter how many times they stamp "trade sale - no warranty implied or given" across the receipt they are effectively giving a 30 day warranty against major failure whether they like it or not due to consumer laws selling direct to Joseph Public and not trade to trade.
It should be okay, still check those caliper mounting bolts though!

Utterly bored riding inline 4 cylinder litre bikes on the road now.

It's been used on track and dropped at some point. NotE the gummed front tyre, damaged left hand crash bung and what appears to be a dent on the tank.
Personally I wouldn't touch it having seen it.
Meh! Personally I wouldn't touch it having seen it.
Honest enough minor damage, all tallies up if you include the lhs paddock stand bobbin and lhs pillion footrest. Front tyre markings indicate novice / inters.
Give the crash bungs a shave on the lathe, rattle can the generator cover and a baglux tank cover if you offended by it and it could still hold its head up at bike meet.
You could cartwheel that into the gravel traps a few times then stick a white fibreglass fairing on it and it's still worth £1500.
The problems with spills on track is the Harling effect of kitty litter on the bike. The bike looks heavily polished rather flatly to hide most I'm sure of it.
He's still entitled to walk away from this I should add if it's a dog when he sees it. He has no obligation to complete his purchase through eBay despite them saying so.

I have some magic beans I could let you have at a very reasonable price...Perhaps a little bit more than I would have offered for the bike, but I would have no worries about the engine - it's a Honda after all.
Ignore the knockers, get on it and thrash its tits off. Keep on top of the oil changes and it will do another 20-30k without issue.
