I've just been offered a 32,000 mile GSX1400 and whilst they were never great shakes when they came out, with their rather underwhelming (for a 1400) 98 bhp, they seem to have a cult following nowadays if not quite a classic yet.
The bike would seem to be a £3,500 machine normally but this is Cat D, repaired by the owner after buying back the bike off the insurance company 8 years ago, due to a low speed car park drop. The value at the time was quite low so they would not repair it.
What sort of value then would you people suggest would be right?

£2.5k?

98bhp might not sound a lot but its not about peak power with these, they are great engines.

I've had a quick look on Autotrader and the £3.5k price tag you seem to refer to is dealer prices on half the mileage.

Cat D wouldn't put me off but I wouldn't be offering anything north of £3k. But how long is a piece of string.

We have no idea of the age, condition of bike cosmetically and mechanically.

What year, what condition, how much service history, how many previous owners?

It's all there, new chain but needs 2 tyres very soon. Full mot. Decent enough but not been cleaned for a good few miles. Scorpion silencers, good nick but need a leak fixing and a good polish of the end cans (4-2).
Starts instantly and settles down quickly to a quiet idle.
Not mint but then it's 2004 and 32k miles.

Very little service history unfortunately but it goes reasonably well. My current 2 big bikes make most things feel slow though.

£2000 maximum.

Wrong time of year to be selling, needs tyres, exhaust sorted and a damn good clean, never mind what you haven't noticed yet.
It's also a Cat D.

If it was me (bearing in mind I'm a complete hard-nosed wker) I would offer him £1500 and leave my mobile number for him to get back in touch after Christmas when the credit card bill hits the mat.

Have a look at ebay completed items to get an idea of what they actually sell for.

I genuinely think it's better than £1,500, these bikes have a strong following now. The full clean and the exhaust fix (joint loose) is a day in the garage for me, the tyres £180 a pair. I have had a quick look, top ones are 6 to 8 GRAND i just noticed, cheapest i can find from 5 selling sites is £2,450.

Plenty on Autotrader above £6,000 and some around £8,000. Maybe they are already classic and collectable bikes, i would assume from that money.

Top ones.

Top ones that idiots pay far too much for.

Selling site prices are all fine and good anyway, but that is what sellers advertise at, not what buyers buy at, hence me suggesting completed items on ebay.

I could spray-paint a jobbie and advertise it for £10k, but I don't think anyone would buy it!

In the meantime, you have already convinced yourself you are going to buy the bike, all you are wanting is the reassurance of strangers on the internet that you are doing the right thing; you're not, but if it makes you feel any better then you just go for it!

I am not doing the right thing? Firstly, don't 'assume'. That makes an 'ass' out of 'u' and to a much lesser extent out of 'me'. I haven't decided anything yet.
I suggest you take a look at my garage, i am perfectly capable of buying and riding/driving the great bikes/cars i wish to, but on the odd occasion it's nice to hear what other people think. (The other repliers were far less arrogant and aggressive than you, note.)
AS it happens you are miles out anyway and completely wrong! Having looked again the cheapest one at £2,450 is a total dog with 63,000 miles covered. Similar bikes to the one i may buy are £3,750 to £4,250. Cat D for cosmetic damage according to a dealer who has sent me private mail takes 20% off the value as a rule. So this is a £2,800-ish bike all day long.
Also, don't think people will not pay top money for the very cleanest motorcycles, either. I sold a moped recently for £6,000 and an ill-handling pretty slow 1976 750 with horrific brakes in April this year for £20,000.

Hurray!

You go for it!

Outstanding deal, probably the best one you've ever made, you'll never regret it!

I have always wondered why idiots come to a forum full of opinions when what they want is reassurance and a swift hand-job to congratulate them on their intended purchase.

It's a st bike. They're capable, they're getting a following with all the idiots that used to bin their Gixxers riding like tts but now are a bit fat and old to sport the proper white and blue bikes but they're not 3 year old Aprilia Tuono money bikes.

For £3500 I would be wanting a bit more than a swift hand-job anyway!

Whatever, happy new year.
Further research shows these bikes are very sought after, something i admit i never knew as they were very so-so, back in their day. The Yamaha XJR1300SP (Ohlins rear shocks) is finding it's way up the value charts as well, i am reliably informed. Time to buy, as they are around from £2,000.

But you're not!!11111!!!!zOMG! They're appreciating classics!

Fat old men bikes, with little real value. They've just stopped depreciating and people think they're on to something like the Focus RS/Clio V6. It's just reached the point where if it was any cheaper it'd be better to break them.

Cat D should be 20-25% off what an unrecorded one goes for, bear in mind it will put some people off which is good when buying but you may well have the same issue when trying to sell it on again.
Personally on a bike of that age and value, being a Cat D wouldn't bother me at all.
