I'm buying a bike and putting it into a mates garage till spring as I don't have anywhere to keep it at mine at present.

I'm going to insure it now purely for the theft aspect.

I'm assuming I'll need to inform the insurance company of the change of storage address in the spring which they will no doubt charge me for.

Is anyone insured with a company that doesn't charge £25/30 quid just for a few keystrokes?

Okay assuming the el cheapo insurance companies are rubbish how does one find a better one?

I normally use a comparison site and pick a low priced company that I’ve at least heard of. I have to say that in the various car/ bike accidents I’ve ever had the el cheapo company’s did their job.

So do you go further up the list to more expensive and how far do you go?

50% more expensive, double the lowest price , triple?

Or are there companies who are just ‘better’ who you need to contact direct?

Each company have their own rules on making changes. Unfortunately you have to do a bit of digging to find out what these are. This is the only information I found online about this.
from MSE website May 15

Of course it only covers cars and houses, but it might give a hint on who's worth investigating and who isn't.
Could you get a 6 month laid up pollicy for less and then just get a new policy when you start riding again?

Don't be afraid of haggling.

I changed bikes in October with MCE, they wanted to charge about £30 admin fee (forgot exactly how much it was)
After a bit of talking and haggling with the lady on the phone, she went to "check with her manager" and they removed the fee completely.

Always worth a try.

Tbh most insurance companies charge unless you can online then normally free.
A problem might arise is that your bike isnt at your home address.
