Not sure what to go for, I want my first one litre bike after a succession of 600’s, 650s and 675s

I have a friend who is selling a Black K7 GSXR but also like R1’s having rode a friends

What is everyone’s opinion of the following and what would you choose and why?

Yamaha R1 2005 5VY
Yamaha R1 2007 4C8
GSXR K7

GSXRs, or "Gixxers" vomit as they are known by their shellsuit clad pilots - are for idiots.

A discerning rider will go for an R1 every time and revel in it's superior build and class.

This says it all...

Lol Thanks, to be fair the GSXR is a very well looked after bike, he purchased from new, in his 50s and a fire fighter, I don’t think he owns a shell suit although by the sounds of it some owners do 😂

Just choose the one you like, there's no real difference in performance in any of them, I had a 5VY R1, it was great, I also rode the later one and a GSXR K6, they were both great too, they will all be reliable if they have been looked after, just buy the most standard one you can find.

I had a GSXR K7, I am nearly 50 and have no shell suit. If it is standard and not gixxered up it would be a great bike. With a single exhaust conversion I think they look amazing IMO. Mine had only 3k when I bought it in 2016, Sold it a year later to be told my new owner it had dropped a valve, not sure if this is a weak point on the K7, bit all the K1,2’s have been bullet proof.

Just buy what you like.

Not had the R1.

Judging by his other post I think he wants to track it rather than go sports touring ...

I have a K6 GSXR1000 which has been faultless except for a sticking exhaust valve(?), so going with what you know I would suggest this.

If you choose the R1 then I would...

1/ Have a look at the magneto and ensure a later one has been fitted. There is an issue where the magnet glue fails, the magnets shatter and get into the engine. Being magnetic they don't all end up in the sump.

2/ Check the water outlet in the sump for the combined oil/water pump, which sits in the sump. If the seal in the pump goes then this is the water outlet, if blocked the water has nowhere to go.

The 2007 r1s with the four valve heads drop valves for fun.

5vy would be ok if you don’t mind cooking your jewels.

I’d go K7 as long as you don’t keep the dual exhausts.

Gsxr all day long. I just prefer the sitting position and power delivery vs an R1

Latest big bang is very good... But I still went GSXR (same year) after riding both round Snett

Never understood why EVERY GSX-R owner gets flack.
And I do call them Gixxer's as well.
But I'm not a knock dragging half wit.
That's just what they've been referred to as my whole life.

Having owned Kawasaki, Honda and Suzuki, I'd happily own one of the latter two again in the future.
My 2002 636 was a pile of ste though.

I had a 5VY R1(think that's the right designation it was a 2004 one when they changed to underseat exhausts) and I hated it, couldn't get on with how it handled at all, lots of people seem to love this model but it wasn't for me, I've had a 4XV which I loved and I've ridden a 2016 model which again was amazing.
While I've never owned a GSXR I have ridden a couple of hire ones on track days, think they were K8 600s and I've had a go on a similar age 750 on the road, I really liked them on track, so even though it wasn't a 1000 I'm going to go against the trend and say get a GSXR, or if you can stretch the budget slightly an early S1000RR would probably be my pick, great bikes.

I have / have had a few bikes, the 5VY R1 is a great bike and the one I've kept hold of the longest (6 years), a decat gets rid of cooked plums but the K7 is faster

I have had 3 5vy's over the years.

My last one I had on track for 7 years and have to say it was just brilliant but not as fast as the modern stuff.

I wish I hadn't sold it.

I would buy a 2005-2006 GSXR1000. The ones that came after were all heavier and two pipes does not look "supersporty".
